BMW Finally Giving Fans A Sexy M1-Inspired Two-Door Coupe

Key Takeaways

  • A two-door BMW electric coupe prototype has been spotted, inspired by the M1.
  • The design features sporty proportions, futuristic elements, and a raised rear end with a sloping roofline.
  • The coupe’s positioning in the lineup remains uncertain, but we know that a BMW supercar is coming.

The latest member of the BMW Neue Klasse family of electric vehicles has finally taken shape – at least in prototype form, courtesy of our spies in Germany. Unlike the Vision Neue Klasse Concept sedan, a preview of the electric 3 Series, and the Vision Neue Klasse X Concept, the precursor of the electric next-generation X3, the latest prototype spotted is a two-door coupe, with styling reminiscent of the M1.

Based on the spy shots, the electric BMW coupe has sporty proportions while wearing the styling of the earlier Neue Klasse concept cars. The front end resembles the legendary supercar’s, while the raised rear end and sloping roofline mimic its wedge shape. The overall design (at least from what we’re seeing) looks futuristic, especially with the narrow LEDs and illuminated kidney grille in the middle.

M1-Inspired Coupe

It’s too early to tell where this Neue Klasse coupe fits into the lineup, but based on what we’re seeing, it doesn’t look too sleek, wide, and low to fit into the supercar category. That said, we’re expecting it to be a smaller model, maybe slotting right above the Neue Klasse-based 3 Series, which is already in the last stages of development and will likely start production next year.

However, one important detail in the prototype we noticed is the brakes hiding behind the quirky wheel design. They don’t like conventional disc brakes, which leads us to think these are hub-mounted motors – or at least part of the electric drivetrain’s assembly – that the automaker has been developing for a few years.

A Proper BMW M1 Successor

The dream of a BMW supercar has existed for quite some time, ever since M Boss Frank van Meel confirmed to CarBuzz that a super sports car will always be on the table. With the BMW XM’s sales tanking recently and no successor seen on the horizon, it’s the right time for the automaker to introduce a proper M1 successor – one that can produce up to 1,340 horsepower and is not an SUV.

In the years to come, we’ll see whether BMW will push through with its electric supercar. For now, let’s make peace with the fact that a sporty two-door coupe with M1-inspired styling is already in development, giving us enthusiasts something to look forward to.
