Chevrolet’s Tesla Model Y Fighter Is Nearly Ready To Enter The Ring

Key Takeaways

  • MY2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV is expected to enter production in late August.
  • Affordable 1LT trim availability is yet to be announced; 2LT FWD is currently the cheapest at $43,295.
  • General Motors has yet to confirm any changes or updates for MY2025.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV hasn’t been around for that long, but the affordable electric crossover is already entering its second model year. While General Motors hasn’t announced any updates for the Equinox EV, reports suggest MY2025 will enter production next month.

According to GM Authority, the crossover will begin production on Monday, August 26th, 2024. However, the start of regular production (SORP) date is subject to change, as delays and postponements are possible. CarBuzz has contacted Chevrolet for comment and will update the article once we receive a reply.

Where’s The Affordable 1LT Trim?

After a long wait, 2024 Equinox EVs finally started reaching dealers and customers in May. At the time, not all trims were available, with the 2RS and 2RS Launch Edition being the first examples to ship. These two models are the most common trims for sale on online automotive marketplaces. Since then, other grades, including the 3RS, 3LT, and 2LT, have reached Chevy retailers.

A big deal was made about the Equinox EV’s appealing base price of $34,995. But that’s for the 1LT trim with front-wheel drive, which isn’t available yet. Based on the Equinox EV configurator, the cheapest available trim to order is the $43,295 2LT FWD – not exactly an EV bargain. There’s a good chance that the keenly priced 1LT ($27,495 with the federal tax credit) will arrive with the MY2025 production run.

Even Cheaper GM Electric Vehicles Are Coming

Pricing for the Equinox EV can reach premium levels if you go higher up the range. The 3RS with AWD, for example, retails for $50,095 before incentives, which makes it more expensive than a BMW X3 xDrive 30i ($48,900) and nearly as pricey as the more luxurious BMW i4 eDrive35 ($52,200). GM has plans to cater to cash-conscious EV shoppers with the forthcoming Bolt replacement and, potentially, the revival of the Spark as a compact electric crossover.

A truly affordable EV is finally here, and it’s better than the Bolt in a few key ways.

As a reminder, the Equinox EV FWD offers an exceptional driving range, with a claimed 319 miles between trips to the charger. That is just one mile off the Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD. The all-wheel-drive Equinox EV has a slightly less impressive range, with an estimated 285 miles. While the range is lower, the AWD variant boasts superior performance and power, with 290 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque compared to the FWD’s 210 hp and 242 lb-ft.
