Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Is Getting A Luxurious Genesis Sibling

Key Takeaways

  • Genesis GV60 Magma enters production next year.
  • Racing legend Jacky Ickx collaborating with Genesis to transform the brand’s image.
  • Magma models offer enhanced handling, unique sounds, and balanced performance for a superior driving experience.

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Genesis has just announced that the GV60 will be getting a high-performance Magma variant that will enter production next year. If you haven’t heard of Magma before, it is not meant to be another M or AMG replica. Genesis is still chiefly focused on luxury and won’t bedazzle the Magma range-topping variants of its cars with obnoxious badges and claims of ridiculous power. With electric vehicles, achieving ludicrous output figures is no big deal, so Magma is focusing on making the driver more engaged through enhanced handling, and it wants only those who appreciate such attributes to notice the only subtle styling difference of these cars: blacked-out badges. Of course, the optional orange paint turns that philosophy on its head slightly, but the marque needs some way of capturing the attention of the uninitiated.

Magma Collaborates With Racing Royalty

Genesis has partnered with racing legend Jacky Ickx, and he will work closely with the marque’s design lead, Luc Donkwerwolke. Together, they aim to transform the image of the brand, and that starts with Ickx unveiling and driving the GV60 Magma at the Goodwood Festival of Speed today. For the first time ever, the public will see the enhanced EV in action as it climbs the Duke of Richmond’s famous driveway with Ickx at the wheel.

Without going into what specifically has been done to the GV60, Genesis says Magma models will wear a wider body and have a lower stance, thanks to unique chassis and suspension upgrades. No mention of power outputs is made, but the current model provides 429 horsepower most of the time and up to 483 hp for 10-second bursts. We suspect that Genesis won’t be adding much more horsepower if any at all. But is that such a bad thing?

Magma Has Been Impressive So Far

As an EV, it only makes sense that Genesis will also provide a Magma-exclusive sound to entertain occupants. This, says Genesis, will work in tandem with a unique interface that only displays the most important data and functions so that the driver can focus on enjoying the experience. With “ample power and precise vehicle dynamics control,” Genesis Magma models are expected to be a perfect balance of comfort and performance, and if our experience in the G70 Track Taxi is anything to go by, that’s exactly what the GV60 Magma will offer. Production is scheduled for Q3 2025, and sales will begin in Korea next year. Europe will follow the year after, but there’s no word on the US yet. Expect an announcement soon.
