Now, nearly four years later, the chief executive is promising that the electric supercar will finally be available from next year. Speaking at the Q2 2024 Earnings Call, Musk told investors that the long-awaited Roadster is just around the corner. “We’ve completed most of the engineering. I think there are still some upgrades we want to make to it, but we expect to be in production with Roadster next year. It will be something special,” he said.
Coming Next Year – Or Is It?
While that’s encouraging, we’ll take that with a pinch of salt, as Tesla has repeatedly pushed back models – the Cybertruck only arrived late last year even though it was revealed back in 2019. When the Roadster was originally unveiled, Musk promised that it would be able to reach 60 mph in less than two seconds, which would rival the likes of the record-breaking Rimac Nevera and Pininfarina Battista.

That’s not good enough for Musk. In February, he announced that the Roadster would be able to reach the benchmark speed in less than one second, which sounds outrageous. According to the CEO, that eye-widening claim won’t even be the most exciting aspect of the car. The top speed is said to be 250 mph, while the range is estimated to be around 620 miles.
We Expect More Changes To Come
Last year, Musk said that the Roadster would enter production by the end of this year. The automaker may start building the electric supercar in late December, with the first units reaching customers in early 2025. If that’s the case, we expect to see a revised production-ready version rather soon, as Tesla still wants to make changes to the supercar.

Tesla has made some interesting claims regarding the EV’s capabilities. In 2019, the CEO said that the Roadster would be able to fly or hover thanks to a “SpaceX cold gas thruster system with ultra high-pressure air in a composite over-wrapped pressure vessel in place of the 2 rear seats.” It remains to be seen whether this will reach the production-ready model. Musk has also alluded to a special SpaceX rocket thruster package that would introduce 10 small rocket thrusters for improved acceleration, handling, and top speed.
