Lucid’s second vehicle is getting closer to customers, with the Gravity SUV entering its pre-production run at the Casa Grande factory in Arizona. Company CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson posted a video on LinkedIn of the first Gravity SUV descending from the roof conveyor to the main assembly line.
Painted in Infinite Black, this example is our first look yet at the Gravity that will reach customers. Lucid has not said when official production of the new model will take place, but Rawlinson noted that the automaker has reached “a significant milestone on our path to full production.”
Lucid Motors
Lucid Motors was founded in California in 2007 as a manufacturer and developer of battery technology, with several former Tesla engineers and executives joining the company since then. Development of its first car began in 2014, with the Air revealed as a luxury electric vehicle in December 2016. It has since revealed its first SUV, the Gravity, but work continues on battery development, which Aston Martin is set to take advantage of in the future.

Lucid’s First SUV Is Getting Ready For Production
The vehicles built during this pre-production run will help Lucid perfect any niggles or issues that may crop up in the assembly process. “Each unit will help us perfect the process and will be used for final validation testing to ensure top-tier build quality in full-scale production,” said Rawlinson.

Revealed in 2023, the Gravity is Lucid’s first foray into the highly competitive electric SUV category. Poised to fight the Tesla Model X (and possibly the Karma GT-UV), the Gravity promises strong performance, range, and plenty of luxury. Based on the company’s claims, it will satisfy an array of customers. With a sub-$80,000 starting price, more than 440 miles of range, and seating for up to seven occupants, the Gravity sounds like a great all-rounder.
Gravity Will Handle Like Something Smaller And Sportier
Earlier this year, Lucid gave us a glimpse of the Gravity’s testing regime, with the SUV undergoing cold weather testing in the chilly climes of Alaska. At the time, Lucid said that it was imperative to evaluate the traction control, stability control, and braking systems in these challenging conditions. The automaker said that the Gravity will handle like a sports sedan or hot hatch, which is promising.

We expect the Gravity will enter production later this year, which means customers may be driving their electric SUVs before 2024 concludes. In other Lucid news, the automaker has updated the Air sedan for MY2025. The starting price remains below $70,000, but all models receive the heat pump from the Air Sapphire and the DreamDrive Premium safety suite, while the Air Grand Touring also receives Surreal Sound Pro as standard. Most importantly, the Air Pure AWD has an EPA-certified 146 MPGe energy rating.
