Cooper S Dressed Up In JCW Trim Previews Mini’s Sportiest Models

Key Takeaways

  • Mini showcases athletic-looking JCW trim for the Cooper S.
  • Performance remains unchanged, but the hot hatch benefits from sportier exterior styling and interior details.
  • Cabin enhancements include sports seats with synthetic leather upholstery.
  • Full-fat JCW models are expected to be revealed in the fall.

The new Mini Cooper JCW models will be revealed later this year but, in the meantime, the boutique brand has introduced a more aggressive-looking John Cooper Works Trim for the new Cooper S. The hot hatch already looks sporty, but the JCW touches elevate the design, with more prominent styling cues. This package is also offered on the Cooper Electric hardtop.

This includes macho-looking diffusers at the front and rear in gloss black. This works beautifully with the rich green paintwork worn by the Mini. Of course, other colors are available. The John Cooper Works logo takes pride of place on the radiator grille and stands out with its white and red color scheme. The grille itself is bolder than before, eschewing the color-coded trim found on the regular Cooper S in favor of a gloss black design with a checkered flag-style motif.

Sporty Styling, Inside And Out

Aside from that, the side mirror caps and roof have also been painted black to contrast with the main paint color. JCW-branded brake calipers can be found behind the wheels, which are available in 17- and 18-inch designs (exclusive to the JCW trim, of course). The changes don’t end here, though.

Inside, the JCW receives sports seats trimmed in black faux leather. To uplift this rather somber color choice, Mini has kitted the hatchback out with red accent seams and a “multicolor knitted material” around the shoulder area of the backrest. Elsewhere, the motorsport theme continues with a black and red checkered flag design on the knitted dashboard surface.

Okay, But Where Are The Real JCW Minis?

As with the rest of the Mini lineup, the Cooper S JCW trim receives the 9.4-inch circular OLED display that houses the media, climate controls, navigation, and telephone functions. This includes the Mini Experience Modes, which changes the interior ambiance and driving characteristics based on the chosen mode. There’s also a JCW-inspired Go-Kart mode that turns the central display and interior lighting Anthracite Red. Despite the sportier aesthetic, the powertrain remains unchanged. That means buyers can expect a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 201 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Mini claims the little Cooper S can reach 60 mph in 6.3 seconds.

Those looking for more performance will have to wait for the full-fat versions. For the first time, JCW Minis will be offered in electric and ICE guises. Both have been previewed in prototype guise (and in camouflage), and Mini intends to unveil both JCW variants in the fall. The electric one was previewed earlier this month at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, while the ICE version appeared at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
