Chrysler is recalling a total of 19,516 Pacifica PHEV minivans due to a fire risk. If this sounds familiar, it’s because the electrified family hauler was recalled just two years ago for the same problem. At the time, Chrysler attempted to rectify the problem with a software update, but this didn’t solve the problem.

Per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem stems from a folded or torn anode tab which could result in “the generation of lithium by-product over time.” This and a “second unidentified factor” could result in an internal short in the battery pack, leading to a potential vehicle fire. This comes after America’s fourth-largest recall hit Stellantis and the Pacifica last month.

Pacifica Hybrid Must Be Kept Away From Other Vehicles And Structures

While the automaker hasn’t issued a “Do Not Drive” instruction for the Pacifica PHEV, FCA US has asked that owners of affected minivans park their vehicles “away from structures and other vehicles.” Customers are also being encouraged not to recharge their vehicles until the problem is rectified. It’s worth noting that just 5% of the recalled population is estimated to have this defect.

As mentioned, Chrysler’s previous solution was a software update that enabled the vehicle to monitor the battery for possible fire risks. Aside from that, dealers also replaced battery packs if necessary but, despite the 2022 recall, seven additional fires were potentially linked to the issue. While no accidents or deaths have been linked to the issue, the recall report notes that four injuries have been linked to the defect.

What’s The Solution?

Chrysler’s latest solution is to update the high-voltage battery pack control module (BPCM) software. If required, dealers will replace the battery pack assembly, with both the update and repair carried out at no cost to the customer. Owners will be notified via mail on September 6, 2024, but customers can contact FCA US customer care at 1-800-853-1403. Vehicles repaired under the previous recall will also need to have the latest repair carried out. This isn’t the first time the Pacifica Hybrid has had an issue. In early 2023, 67,118 Pacificas were recalled due to a potential unexpected engine shutdown.
