Tesla Recalling Almost Every Car Since 2021

Key Takeaways

  • Tesla recalls nearly 1.9 million cars due to hood latching software failure.
  • The defect affects the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X.
  • Tesla has already issued an over-the-air software update to address the issue.

Tesla has issued a recall for 1,849,638 vehicles that may have a software failure that means an unlatched hood may go undetected, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall extends to the entire lineup, with the Model 3, Model X, Model S, and Model Y vehicles being affected. The Cybertruck is not part of this recall.

Per the NHTSA recall report, the software may be unable to detect an improperly latched hood, increasing the risk of an accident if the component were to block the driver’s view of the road. Tesla first became aware of the incident earlier this year when Chinese customers complained about “unintended hood opening events.”

Hood Latch Issue Is Affecting Teslas Across The World

In April, the automaker identified the issue as latch switch deformation, which would prevent the owner from being notified if the hood was open. Tesla continued to investigate and analyze vehicles in China and noted that the defect rate was higher in China compared to Europe and North America. This month, Tesla decided to issue a recall, even though no crashes, injuries, or deaths have been linked to the defect.

While the number of recalled vehicles is staggering, Tesla estimates that just 1% of the recall batch suffers from the defect. Unlike most brands, which require customers to bring their vehicles to a dealer for inspection/repair, Tesla simply rolled out an over-the-air software update on June 18. The firmware release 2024.20.3 Firmware release can detect an open hood and alert the driver with a notification.

The Latest In A Long Line Of Tesla Recalls

Tesla has issued several recalls in recent months. In February, approximately 2.2 million Teslas were recalled for using a small font for emergency warning lights, which do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. In May, 125,000 Teslas were recalled due to a seatbelt warning malfunction. Tesla’s pickup truck hasn’t escaped the recall curse either, with 3,878 Cybertrucks suffering from problematic accelerator pedals. Software patches solve most of Tesla’s problems, but it would be better if the cars were delivered without defects in the first place.
