Pagani Utopia Roadster Is 3 Stunning Hypercars In One

Key Takeaways

  • The 851-horsepower Pagani Utopia Roadster shares the same weight as the enclosed model at 2,822 lbs.
  • The Utopia Roadster features a removable hardtop with a glass panel and a soft top enclosed in a suitcase.
  • Optional Sport Pack adds several carbon-fiber-and-titanium-infused elements, sticky tires, and lightweight seats.
  • Pricing for the Utopia Roadster starts at €3.1 million/$3.3 million, but bespoke customization options can increase the cost significantly.

Meet the all-new Pagani Utopia Roadster and marvel at the brilliance of Horacio’s team – the drop-top version of the exquisite hypercar weighs the same 2,822 lbs as the enclosed model. Pagani doesn’t usually place a lot of emphasis on engineering and performance metrics (although its creations are still phenomenally fast), instead wowing fans with intricate details and craftsmanship. That remains the case with the Utopia Roadster, another sculptural work of automotive art, but because the convertible was developed alongside the coupe, Pagani was able to ensure the design was optimal for both applications. This contrasts with the roadster versions of the Zonda and Huayra, as both of these were designed after the originals had been signed off on. As a result, the Utopia Roadster gets some special details.

Every Conceivable Roof Option

The Utopia comes with a removable hardtop with its own display stand, and this creates a coupe-like feeling, but better. That’s because this roof has a large glass panel allowing light to flood the jewel-like cabin. Take it off, and you have an open-top experience, but what if you think there may be inclement weather? Can you store the hardtop in the Utopia Roadster. No, but instead, you do get a soft top enclosed in a suitcase that sits between the two seats. You sacrifice a vanity case, but you gain all-weather capability.

Other changes include floor mats “with a specific texture reminiscent of an outboard boat,” and the hypercar-shaped key fob as taken on the profile of the drop-top so you don’t accidentally take the wrong key when selecting what to drive on a fine summer’s day. As always, the scope of customization for materials and finishes is so vast that no two Utopia Roadsters will be alike, and bespoke fitted luggage with leather-covered carbon shells is just as interesting, with even the hinges and straps down to the buyer’s choice. Finally, two garment bags find a home behind the headrests, making it practical to take on Cannonball Runs and other supercar rallies.

What About Performance?

As mentioned, the Roadster was constructed in the same manner as its sibling, which means a composite monocoque. Pagani reports that there are more than 40 formulas of composite material in the hypercar, including Carbo-Titanium and Carbo-Triax (a fabric-like form of carbon fiber). As a result, no additional reinforcement was required when removing the roof, and the car can retain its butterfly doors. Naturally, the shape was optimized in the wind tunnel, but besides that, you’re getting very much the same recipe as before (no bad thing).

Behind the occupants is a Pagani-exclusive AMG 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine developing 851 hp at 6,000 rpm and 811 lb-ft of torque from 2,800 to 5,900 rpm. Like the hardtop, this can be harnessed with a manual transmission, or you can stick with the Xtrac seven-speed Automated Manual Transmission. The powertrain feeds the rear wheels, and all four corners get forged aluminum wheels wrapped in the Pirelli Cyber Tire version of the P Zero Corsa, measuring 265/35R21 at the front and 325/30/R22 at the back.

Pricing Is Not Low

Interested? Pricing starts at €3.1 million before taxes, or just over $3.3 million at the time of writing. However, you’ll pay a lot more for the exposed carbon finish seen here, and then there’s the Sport Pack, which adds Carbo-Titanium seats that are 20% lighter, as well as shift paddles, gear lever, and floor mats made with the same material. It also adds a titanium exhaust, Aeroblade carbon fiber wheel deflectors, and Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tires. You can see both wheel options at the car’s public reveal at Monterey Car Week, taking place from 9-18 August.
