New Mercedes G-Class Restomod Is A Military G With A Wicked Twist

Key Takeaways

  • Arcade Cars unveils a new Mercedes-Benz G-Class restomod.
  • The Sojourn is based on an early 230 GE and is available with electric and ICE options.
  • Retains rugged ability and appeal, but with some modern luxuries peppered in.
  • Pricing starts at $130,000.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of the greatest off-roaders money can buy. However, in recent years, it has gone decidedly upmarket. The capability remains, but the clientele prefers traversing Rodeo Drive, not rocky terrain. To cater to wealthy customers who want a taste of the original Gelandewagen, Arcade Cars has introduced a restomod based on the 230 GE. It’s called the Sojourn and is intended to “bridge the gap between tradition and innovation.” Let’s take a closer look.

2025 MERCEDES-BENZ G-CLASS

Engine
3.0-liter inline-six gas

Horsepower
443 hp

Torque
413 lb-ft

Transmission
9-speed automatic

Top Speed
130 mph

Beginning with the drivetrains, the Sojourn mirrors the current G-Class by offering both gas and electric options. The battery-powered option has been developed by UK-based specialists Everrati, but no power, performance, or range details have been shared as yet. Those who prefer a more traditional approach can retain the original 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. In standard guise, it produces 126 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque. There is also a more powerful 2.8-liter that boosts outputs to 149 hp and 175 lb-ft.

Rugged Like The Original, But With More Luxury

As a high-end restomod, the Sojourn is considered a bespoke vehicle, with all sorts of options to choose from. While it retains the boxy, upright design that makes the G-Class such a design icon, the Sojourn receives minor revisions that bring it into the 21st century. This includes standard xenon lights or (optional) LED headlights, a selection of wheels – ranging from off-road steel to attractive alloys – and a front bush guard with light-protecting grilles. Customers can also opt for roof- or grille-mounted spotlights for greater visibility when off-roading at night.

While the exterior may be utilitarian, the cabin adopts plenty of modern creature comforts. For a start, customers can select from six- or eight-seater configurations, hand-cut and stitched leather upholstery, various steering wheel and seat designs, and a contemporary infotainment system. The capable 4×4 now gains Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, along with a retro-inspired Bluetooth system that has been neatly integrated into the fascia. The Sojourn also comes with a subwoofer and premium speakers.

“Arcade Cars was born out of a realization that there exists a deep longing for the elegance, charm, and unique character of products of a different era. By scouring the market for the best vendors to source legacy vehicles [and] vetting expert restorers in Germany and Austria – both countries with deep ties to Mercedes Benz and specifically the G Class – we allow our customers to own one of these legendary vehicles without the challenges associated with owning classic cars. We take the onus to thoroughly inspect, plan, supervise, and check the mechanical restoration, and upgrade everything else the owners will touch – from door handles and turn indicators to leather stitching and floor mats. We also blend in technology in simple ways, so that the driver and passengers have what they need, while still maintaining the authentic experiences of owning a classic car.”

– Rishav Kanoria, Arcade Cars Founder and CEO

Rigorous Sourcing And Restoration Process

The old G-Class was designed to be used every day, and many examples have led hard lives. That means Arcade Cars needs to be very selective when choosing donor vehicles. As such, the cars come from a “pool of former Swiss Army stock” which ensures they will have been looked after thoroughly. CEO Rishav Kanoria adds that every vehicle is subjected to a rigorous restoration process, which includes fixing dents and other imperfections.

Once the vehicle is up to standard, customers can choose from a virtually limitless number of colors. Arcade Cars notes that its signature colors of Desert Tan, Dark Olive, Matte Black, or Pacific Blue “represent the tip of the iceberg” when it comes to color selection. As you’d expect, the Sojourn doesn’t come cheap, with prices starting at $130,000. That puts it in the same territory as a new G-Class, which may make the decision easier. The Sojourn will make its official debut at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours in August.
