Listen To The Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale Sing For The First Time

Key Takeaways

  • Alfa Romeo releases a sound sample of the 612-horsepower V6 engine on the modern 33 Stradale.
  • The automaker compares the engine sound to classical music and emphasizes emotion in the driving experience.
  • A new low-volume car is due to follow the 33 Stradale in 2026.

Nearly a year ago, Alfa Romeo unveiled the modern reincarnation of the 33 Stradale, and over recent months, the Italian automaker has been showing off its limited-edition supercar in various ways, including a new Blue Reale paint finish and Glynn Bloomquist’s tributary striped livery that pays tribute to the Tipo 33 racecar. It’s all good and well appreciating or even analyzing the design, but after 12 months, it’s time for some real action, and Alfa Romeo has now satisfied our desire for an acoustic sample of the 612-horsepower 3.0-liter V6. As a reminder, the supercar is also available as an EV with even more power (740 hp), but this heavier, slower version was ordered by a very distinct minority – like the rest of us, wealthy car enthusiasts crave emotion from their driving experience.

Classic Or Cliché?

Alfa Romeo makes some grandiose claims about the sound of the engine, likening its sound to “the elegant, harmonic and sophisticated melodies of classical music.” To illustrate the point, the video opens with a piano recital of “L’amour est un oiseau rebelle,” an aria, or melody, better known as “Habanera,” from Georges Bizet’s 1875 comedic opera Carmen. With the engine and exhaust note contributing to the sound, the supercar changes gear through its eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and a script saying “From piano to allegro” appears.

This doesn’t initially make much sense to the music fanatic, since “allegro” is a high-spirited tempo in which piano (or any other instrument) is played, but the idea is that the subtle elegance of the design hints at sophistication, while the bark of the exhaust hints at a rapid car. Either way, what we do hear of the V6 suggests good throttle response, an enticing induction sound, and not too many turbo noises, although the farts on the upshifts are clearly the result of forced induction .

The 33 Stradale Sounds Good, But What’s On The Horizon For Alfa Romeo?

Recently, Stellantis suggested that none of its 14 brands were safe as it looks to reduce losses from unprofitable brands, but a short time later, the automaker indicated that all 14 brands are safe, saying it remains committed to the entire portfolio and that each still has a 10-year period to prove its worth. As for Alfa Romeo specifically, the company is impressing with fashionable and powerful EVs and is now exploring the possibility of bringing more nameplates to American dealers.

And it will be inspired by classics of the past once again.

At the higher end of the spectrum, deciding on what the company’s new Bottega department will build next in the same vein as the retro-modern 33 Stradale. Fortunately, we don’t have too long to wait for this next chapter, due in 2026, as the 33 Stradale successor will be chosen this year. A large majority of the CarBuzz office is in favor of a GTV/Spider recreation – what would you commission, given the choice? Let us know in the comments below.
