See The BMW M5 Touring Before Its Monterey Reveal

Key Takeaways

  • This BMW M5 Touring teaser showcases its front lighting and kidney grille.
  • The full profile of the M5 Touring is also visible, but in shadow to hide the details.
  • The M5 Touring will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a 43-mile all-electric range and a powerful 718-horsepower engine.

The BMW M5 Touring is coming to the US and this teaser gives us a look at how the grille of this wagon will look when it arrives. It’s a rather frenetic clip with a crazed drummer getting more screen time than the car, but at least we get a few brief seconds of what everyone wants to see. The full reveal is now days away at Monterey Car Week, but this should hold you over in the meantime.

Base Trim Transmission
8-Speed Automatic

Base Trim Horsepower

The teaser shows the M5 Touring driving straight at the camera in pitch black. That makes the sheet metal impossible to see, but it does give a great view of the front lighting. The kidney grille is outlined in lights, which looks fantastic, and also hints at its shape. We’re glad to see this grille doesn’t appear to dominate the front end. Well done, BMW.

Take A Good Look At That Profile

If you have a keen eye and look very carefully between the crazed drummer segments, there is also a side shot of the vehicle’s front end, but it doesn’t reveal a lot. The only other really good look at the car comes at the very end. It’s shown in full profile, although completely in shadow, against a smoky red background that really makes this whole thing feel a bit more like an ’80s music video than a teaser for a car. We kinda like it.

There’s a lot of anticipation for the M5 Touring, in large part because we weren’t even sure it would ever come to the US. The M5 Sedan was a given, but we aren’t exactly known for our love of wagons, so there are more than a few vehicles out there that are only a wagon in Europe. The new Audi A5 Avant is an example of one of the nice things we can’t have here.

The BMW M5 Touring in camoWhat We Know So Far

Full details haven’t been released for the M5 Touring, but we do have a few tidbits about what to expect when this wagon arrives. Expect to see a plug-in hybrid powertrain that is a variant of the engine used in the BMW XM. The all-electric range is said to be 43 miles, which isn’t bad given that this is not a small, lightweight vehicle.

You Only Need One Car, And It’s The New BMW M5 Plug-In Hybrid

Hear us out – the new M5 PHEV is all the car you’ll need!

In terms of power, the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 plug-in hybrid engine and electric motor will deliver 718 horsepower. That’s a healthy figure that should ensure the driving enthusiasts likely to go for the wagon end up smiling. The wagon will be heavy, with leaked figures putting its weight at 5,356 pounds, but we’re not worried. This is an M car and BMW has yet to produce one that didn’t deliver on the performance promise of that one simple letter.
