Rivian Stealing Tesla Tactics To Sell More EVs

Owners and potential owners of the Rivian R1S and R1T Truck can now benefit from the automaker’s referral program. This new system intends to increase sales of the pricey electric vehicles, with a $750 credit awarded to both the existing Rivian owner and customer using the referral code. It’s worth noting that the new customer only receives their award after they purchase their highly-capable electric off-roaders.

While $750 doesn’t sound like much when you consider the R1T’s $69,900 starting price, that’s not the only thing participants can look forward to, with both parties receiving six months of free charging at Rivian Adventure Network sites. The referral program is only available in the United States, but Rivian plans to introduce the incentive to Canada in 2025.

Referral Rewards Can Be Used To Purchase Rivian Accessories

Customers can use their $750 rewards to redeem Rivian merchandise from the company’s online store. This is clever, as it keeps people interested in the brand, and channels the money back into the automaker. The EV marque offers a wide range of accessories, from camping items like a coffee grinder ($40) to a nifty travel kitchen ($1,400).

Speaking to Automotive News, several industry analysts have said this is a clever way of marketing to new customers without adopting traditional advertising techniques. It relies on the owner to sell the product and convince those close to them to spend their money on an expensive vehicle.

“These programs appeal to automakers because they’re quite simple to implement and therefore less expensive to run compared to other advertising methods. Creating a program where both parties receive benefits also creates a win-win situation, which likely encourages greater participation.”

Tesla And Lucid Also Have Referral Programs

Rivian is also offering owners the prospect of an “adventure weekend.” However, achieving this may be a bit more difficult, and it is limited to the first 100 owners who make 25 referrals. “As a lifestyle-heavy product, Rivian offering points redeemable towards Rivian gear has twofold benefits: Many of the branded products serve as additional advertising, and the perceived value of the branded gear is likely higher than their actual cost to make,” added Drury.

It’s worth noting that Tesla and Lucid also have their own referral programs. The former recently updated its system, with existing customers earning a $500 gift card when someone uses their referral code to purchase a Tesla. The new customer also gets a $1,000 vehicle discount, which can be applied to every vehicle except the Cybertruck. As for Lucid, discounts range from $750 to $1,250 depending on the chosen Air trim.
