Toyota Finally Admits The Big Problem With The Tacoma

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma was fully redesigned last year with a new look, new trims, and new engine options. It also rides on a new platform shared by the Tundra, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser. These offer either a 2.4-liter gas engine with 278 horsepower or a hybrid with 326 hp. Both come paired with an eight-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with an available six-speed manual on select trims. Sounds good, but some Tacoma owners have been reporting transmission failures.

This is happening even on Tacomas with low mileage, sometimes under 1,000 miles, and has resulted in complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Owners experiencing these issues were none too happy to have their trucks out of commission, especially with long wait times to get them back in working order. While no recall has been issued yet, Toyota did put out an official Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) addressing the complaints.

Toyota Has A Fix For The Problem

The folks over at Tacoma4G obtained a copy of the TSB with all the details. It includes half a dozen possible diagnostic codes that a technician might see when the problem occurs. It also lists out details about exactly which vehicles are potentially impacted by the transmission issue.

The good news here is that Toyota is acknowledging that something is amiss and letting its techs know exactly what needs to be done to get customer vehicles repaired. The notes indicate that both the automatic transmission assembly and the torque converter will need to be replaced.

Figuring Out If Your Tacoma Is On The List

While some people have already found out the hard way that their Tacoma has a problem, there are still plenty of owners driving around with Tacomas that are fine right now but might experience the issue later. The TSB shows the list of vehicle identification numbers (VINs) that could possibly have the faulty transmission. If the issue comes up, certain trouble codes will show up with diagnostic scanning.

  • P07407F – Torque Converter Clutch Actuator Stuck Off
  • P079571 – Pressure Control Solenoid “C” Actuator Stuck
  • P08BA71 – Pressure Control Solenoid “L” Actuator Stuck
  • P271371 – Pressure Control Solenoid “D” Actuator Stuck
  • P280771 – Pressure Control Solenoid “G” Actuator Stuck
  • P281671 – Pressure Control Solenoid “H” Actuator Stuck

Although Toyota recently issued a recall of over 100,000 units of the Tundra and Lexus LX, it’s important to note that this is not a recall, at least not yet. It’s simply a TSB, so technicians know exactly what needs to be done to get trucks back on the road. Even if your Tacoma has a VIN on the list, don’t expect a letter in the mail telling you to take it in for repair. It’s a bit of a wait-and-see situation at the moment. CarBuzz has reached out to Toyota for comment and will update this story with additional information as it is received.
