McLaren has confirmed the name of the next hypercar to carry the torch lit by the F1 and fanned by the P1 hybrid: the W1. McLaren just announced that something special would be presented next week Sunday, taking the opportunity to talk about its previous halo hypercars, and while it’s easy to understand why the number 1 was chosen, why the W? When CarBuzz discovered the trademark back in March, we theorized that this was a nod to McLaren’s headquarters in Woking, but as it turns out, it’s more meaningful than that.
“The W1 name celebrates McLaren’s World Championship mindset, with the public reveal date [October 6] marking the 50th anniversary of McLaren winning its first Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship, and Emerson Fittipaldi winning the 1974 World Driver’s Championship with McLaren.”
