Toyota and Subaru are working on yet another electric vehicle together, and it really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that it will in fact be another SUV, but production could come sooner than expected. A new report from Nikkei Asia says that it will launch in January of 2026.

Subaru is the car making division of the Japanese transport company, Subaru Corporation, and it’s one of the largest in the world. It was founded in 1953, preceded by the Nakajima Aircraft Company, and today manufactures vehicles known for their boxer engines, symmetrical all-wheel drive systems, and pedigreed history.

Toyota is a Japanese automaker founded in 1937 that has developed a reputation for reliability across a multitude of segments, from sports cars and family sedans to pickup trucks and off-roaders. Famous models from the brand include the Hilux, Land Cruiser, Camry, Crown, and Corolla, the latter being the world’s best-selling vehicle nameplate, with more than 50 million Corolla-badged vehicles being sold since it was first introduced. Toyota typically competes in the mainstream market, but is also famous for launching Lexus as a luxury sub-brand to take on Mercedes-Benz.

Long-Term EV Partners
The two automakers have already collaborated on the EV currently sold as the Toyota bZ4x and Subaru Solterra. When the very similar models launched, the two said that Toyota was handling things like the chassis, while Subaru handled all-wheel drive. However, it was never exactly clear how Subaru’s mechanical AWD system knowledge made the leap to EV. While the bZ4X/Solterra twins are built at Toyota’s factory in Aichi, this new project will be built by Subaru and is expected to roll out of the automaker’s Yajima site.

The new electric SUV will share parts, likely including its platform, with the first two EVs. This will help speed up the development and reduce costs for both brands. Subaru’s plans for this model come with some lofty production goals. The Nikkei report says the plan is to build 15,000-20,000 units per month, which is in stark contrast to sales so far this year of 13,577 bZ4X, and 9,137 Solterra models in the U.S.

Three-Row EV Delayed
Back in May, Subaru announced that it would have four electric models on the market by the end of 2026 as part of its partnership with Toyota. One of those was to be a three-row model built in the U.S. at Toyota’s plant in Kentucky. That model was set to begin production next year, but Toyota had previously announced that it would be pushed back until the first half of 2026. That would mean three new EVs, all likely crossovers, arriving at Subaru and Toyota dealers in 2026.
While the two will collaborate on EVs, they will also continue to pursue internal combustion engines. The pair, along with Mazda, held a joint press conference earlier this year to announce that new and improved ICE powertrains would be coming alongside their electric and electrified offerings.
