While Subaru builds some of its models in Indiana and avoids the “Trump tax”, others are imported and that would significantly affect their prices

- Subaru has reportedly warned dealers that current pricing can’t be guaranteed due to Trump’s tariffs.
- If you’re in the market for a new car, you could potentially save thousands by acting before April 2.
- While the company builds an assortment of vehicles in America, imports could be hit by a 25% tariff.
Subaru of America’s Vice President of Vehicle Planning and Logistics has reportedly warned retailers about impending tariffs. While the message was apparently sent before President Trump’s move to impose a 25% tariff on all automotive imports, it highlights the uncertainty in the industry.
In the purported letter, Lisa Quan said the company has been “actively assessing the potential effects of tariffs” and noted they’ll inevitably raise the cost of doing business. Given the general uncertainty at the time, she said “current vehicle pricing cannot be protected and may be subject to change… after April 2.”

That date is when new automotive tariffs are slated to go into effect, but Trump has already delayed earlier tariffs targeting Canada and Mexico. This makes it unclear if the promised tariffs will actually go into effect and if they’ll be as high as promised.
Subaru is far from the only company that would be impacted by the ‘Trump tax’. BMW recently told its dealers that it would absorb tariffs on Mexican-made vehicles, at least initially. However, with all imports now being targeted, that dam might have burst.

Getting back to Subaru, the company has a plant in Indiana that builds an assortment of models, including the Ascent, Crosstrek, and Outback. The automaker also has plans for a US-made electric crossover that will be built by Toyota.

This gives it some much needed cover, but a number of models are still built overseas including the BRZ and Solterra. The electric crossover starts at $38,495, so a 25% tariff could add $9,623.75 onto the price tag if Subaru doesn’t take part of the hit.
