Gretzky’s Trophy Rolls Is for Sale Just In Case Ovechkin Wanted A Used Congratulations Gift

  • Wayne Gretzky received this rare Rolls-Royce after breaking the NHL goals record in 1994.
  • Alex Ovechkin surpassed Gretzky’s goal record, prompting the car’s return to the spotlight.
  • It’s one of just 219 ever made, and the auction house expects it to sell for over half a million.

Wayne Gretzky dominated his sport to a degree not seen in the other major U.S. sports. When he broke the NHL’s goal-scoring record in 1994, his team gifted him this Rolls-Royce Corniche IV. It’s one of just 219 ever made, it has less than 10,000 miles on the odometer, and it can be yours if you have the cash.

When Gretzky scored his 802nd goal, he surpassed Gordie Howe as the league’s all-time goal-scoring leader. This weekend, Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals scored his 895th goal, surpassing Gretzky’s final tally at the end of his career. Now, as that torch is handed off from one legend to the next, the car gifted to The Great One is getting passed on as well.

A Ceremony on Ice

This 1994 Corniche IV rolled onto the ice at a game against the Mighty Ducks a week after Gretzky set his record. “I really do feel a little embarrassed standing here getting this car this evening. It’s overwhelming, but I’ll take it,” he said at the ceremony celebrating his accomplishment. Somewhat hilariously, Gretzky joked with the owner of the Capitals on Sunday that “when I set the record, they bought me a Rolls-Royce, so you got your work cut out for you.”

Hey, maybe he can pick up this slightly used Rolls-Royce, and it can move from one Hall-of-Famer to the next. It features a 6.75-liter V8 engine, a 4-speed automatic gearbox, and classy, timeless looks. Built in November of 1993, it features a factory-optioned tinted windscreen, chrome door mirrors, black paint, and vermilion pinstripes. The cabin includes black leather upholstery, burled walnut, a grey headliner, and black Wilton carpets throughout.

Where It’s Been—and Where It’s Going

It’s unclear how long Gretzky owned the car, but it currently has 9,107 miles on the odometer. In 2016, someone in Indian Wells, California, bought the car and kept it until 2023. At that time, it moved on to Massachusetts. The next year, it went back to O’Gara Coach Company of Beverly Hills for a $17,000 restoration. Some of that is available to watch via the video below.

Now, the car is up for auction at RM Sotheby’s, estimated to fetch over $500,000. There’s no reserve, though, so it could go for less than expected, which would be fitting, given Gretzky’s modest reaction to the whole affair.
