The collaboration between Smart and Brabus goes all the way back to 2003. Since then, the German brand has transitioned from a city car-maker to an all-SUV lineup, though the partnership with the Mercedes-Benz tuner has remained, even with Smart’s new electric vehicle range. The latest Smart to get the Brabus treatment is the #5, the brand’s flagship revealed last year and its biggest model to date, comparable to the size of the BMW X3 and with more power than an X3 M.

Outside, the Smart #5 Brabus has been styled to fit the other Brabus-tuned SUVs of the Chinese-owned automaker. Apart from the Brabus branding, the #5 also gets exclusive paint finishes and a set of 21-inch Brabus Monoblock Z wheels. Underneath the 10-spoke design lies Brabus’ signature red brake calipers to go with the sporty look.
Premium Cabin Elevated Further By Brabus
You can find the bulk of Brabus work inside the #5. The seats have been upholstered with high-quality microfiber for a premium feel and “an exceedingly elegant ambiance,” with the front ones ventilated and the rear heated. The steering wheel has also been enhanced with Alcantara material, decorated with an illuminated Brabus logo. Other Brabus badges are found all over the cabin to mark its exclusivity.

Remember when all Smart made were tiny two-door city cars?
The Smart #5 Brabus also gets a panoramic halo roof with a microfiber headliner, again, for a premium feel, plus sporty pedals and an Ambient Light+ system with 256 colors to choose from. To complement the dual central OLED displays – including a 13-inch touchscreen for the passenger – the #5 gets a 20-speaker Sennheiser Signature Sound System that supports stereo, surround sound, and Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 audio format.
No Power Boost Because It Didn’t Need One
Unlike Brabus’ work with Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the Smart #5 didn’t get any power boost, and it didn’t need one. The boxy crossover can make 637 horsepower sent to all four wheels, with the capability to sprint to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds. Brabus added fake engine sounds, though, for “a new level of emotion to electric driving.” The 100-kWh battery is good for 336 miles, though that was rated using the more forgiving WLTP cycle.

Brabus Tuned The Last Car You’d Ever Expect
The names “Brabus” and “Tesla Roadster” don’t look like they belong in the same sentence… but in this case, they do.
Brabus didn’t disclose the pricing for its #5, though it’s important to note that its other Smart creations aren’t cheap. The Brabus-tuned #1 starts at £44,960 or around $57,500 at current exchange rates, while the #3 has a starting price of £46,460 ($59,400). America won’t likely get these Smart SUVs soon, but if the brand should return, the #5 and its Brabus version are its best bet against other EVs, such as the best-selling Tesla Model Y.
