Tesla Just Released a Much Cheaper Cybertruck

Amid tariff chaos and sharply declining sales, Tesla has announced its latest version of the Cybertruck. This is the Long Range single-motor trim, slotting in as the base model for the lineup. It doesn’t exactly have a base-model price tag, though. With destination fees included, it still costs $71,985.

What do you get for that price? The least-expensive Cybertruck has the longest range of them all, going an estimated 350 miles on a single charge. That’s approximately 25 more miles compared to the All-Wheel Drive trim, which costs an extra $10,000. The single motor drives the rear axle, and though a horsepower figure isn’t mentioned, Tesla claims it can reach 60 miles per hour in 6.2 seconds. A locking rear differential is included to help with traction.

As for standard equipment, you get “textile” seats, which are made of a cloth material. They come with a heating element but no ventilation. Elsewhere, the stereo goes down to seven speakers versus 15 in the higher trims. You’ll find 18-inch wheels at each corner, and at the back, the powered tonneau cover is gone. Also gone are the plethora of 120-volt power plugs, though Tesla offers an adapter for the charging port that gives you two plugs if you need them.

The air suspension is replaced with adaptive coil springs, which means you can’t adjust the ride height. A towing package is standard, but the maximum tow rating falls to 7,500 pounds. That’s still a hefty amount, plenty capable of pulling campers or boats. The cargo capacity of 2,006 pounds is also stout. By comparison, the AWD Cybertruck can carry 2,500 pounds in its bed. As far as we can tell, the base model still has steer-by-wire controls with front- and rear-wheel steering.

Optional upgrades include 20-inch wheels, though you’ll lose a bit of range in the process. An available soft tonneau cover for the bed adds range, with Tesla quoting 362 miles if equipped with the smaller wheels. Full Self Driving is available for an extra $8,000, and you can add things like a sunshade, underseat storage, and floor mats for nominal prices under $300.

Compared to other electric pickups, the Ford F-150 Lightning starts at $65,190 and features a dual-motor powertrain. The Chevrolet Silverado EV is available in a single-motor 2WT trim for $57,095. In the Rivian camp, the R1T Starts at $71,900 with a dual-motor powertrain punching out 533 hp.

According to Tesla’s website, the base Cybertruck will be available sometime between June and July of this year.
