Sources say Nissan will reassess production plans for the Rogue if and when the tariffs change

- Nissan will cut 13,000 Japan-built Rogues originally intended for the United States.
- US-bound production was reduced in response to rising automotive import tariffs.
- The Rogue remains Nissan’s top seller in the US, despite declining annual volume.
The Rogue is the single best-selling Nissan model in the United States. Unfortunately for the company, many of them are built in Japan, exposing them to President Trump’s 25% tariffs on automotive imports. In response, it will cut some Japanese production of the compact crossover.
Last year, 245,724 Rogues were sold Stateside, easily eclipsing ’s the brand’s second-best-selling model, the Sentra sedan. Admittedly, the Rogue dropped 9.5% from 2023’s 271,458 units, but make no mistake; it still is a very important model for its maker.

According to an unnamed source with knowledge of Nissan’s plans, output of the Rogue will be reduced by 13,000 units at the Kyushu plant in southwest Japan across May, June, and July. During that period, employees will work fewer hours and production will be completely halted on some days.
Reuters reports that Nissan will reassess its production plans if tariffs change. In a statement, it said it’s reviewing its production and supply chain operations and is adapting to market changes.

Nissan is more exposed than some other car companies to Trump’s new tariffs. The US accounts for more than 25% of its global sales, and while the Rogue is also built at its Smyrna, Tennessee facility since 2023, many of the vehicles it sells locally are produced in Japan or Mexico.
In January, Nissan said it would cut Rogue production at Smyrna from two shifts to one starting in April, and do the same for the Altima at its Canton site from September. However, it recently backtracked on this plan and will retain two shifts for US production of the Rogue to reduce the impact of the tariffs.
