Porsche is in the midst of testing the facelifted 992.2-generation 911 Turbo S, and a few weeks after our spy photographers snapped it at the Nurburgring, it’s also been filmed on the move at the famed German circuit. Like its predecessors, it will sound a bit like a vacuum cleaner, but should offer performance to rival some of the most impressive mid-engined supercars on the market.

Porsche has done such a fine job of perfecting the 911 Turbo family in recent years that it could have simply slapped on a pair of new bumpers on the 992.2 and called it a day. However, that’s not the way it operates. Instead, the facelifted Turbo S will feel more like an all-new generation model thanks to the adoption of a hybrid powertrain.

Although there’s no way of seeing what’s going on under the skin of this prototype, the fact that it sports a yellow circular sticker on the rear window denotes it as being a hybrid. That may not be welcomed by some 911 purists, but it’s good news for those eager to see the Turbo S become an even more insane performance weapon.

The existing model uses a 3.7-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six delivering 640 hp and 590 lb-ft (799 Nm) in flagship Turbo S guise. Like the new 911 GTS, the 992.2 Turbo S’s transition to hybrid power will see a small electric motor integrated within the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. This motor adds 54 hp and 110 lb-ft to the GTS, and similar gains can be expected for the Turbo S. That means the relatively unassuming-looking 911 could pack upwards of 700 hp, out-muscling even the McLaren Artura and Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray.

The engineer behind the wheel of this prototype was seen putting all that new power to the test. At one stage, they can be seen performing an epic four-wheeled drift around one of the Nordschleife’s right-hand corners, while taking other corners at truly staggering speeds. On a circuit, the Turbo S might not match the track-focused GT3, but on the road, it’ll easily outperform any of Porsche’s current GT models.
