Authorities started to chase a white Challenger at around 7:29 p.m. last Monday after an attempt to stop the driver for speeding and reckless driving in Harnett County. The driver refused to pull over and sped along N.C. Highway 24 into Cumberland County. Police reportedly tried to use a spike strip but it didn’t work and one officer was injured in the process.

WRAL News reports the Challenger reached as fast as 150 mph (242 km/h) during the chase and while the driver was able to out-sprint the police, it wasn’t long before the chase ended in a dramatic accident. It’s reported the driver crashed at the intersection of McKenzie Road and N.C. 24 in Spring Lake, hitting at least three other vehicles. Two innocent drivers were injured in the crash and were taken to a nearby hospital.

The force of the impact was so strong that the Dodge’s battery and engine were thrown from the car, with some parts landing in a nearby parking lot. Immediately after the crash, the suspect fled on foot and was able to avoid capture. Police searched the local woods extensively with K9 units and a helicopter but were unable to find the speeding thief.

“There’s a battery, like all the way up here, then a motor over here,” an eyewitness told ABC 11. “The police were going really, really fast. Like. Not like a normal. And there was a good six of them. And they were coming really fast.”
