The new M5’s reveal appears to be happening this month.

Key Takeaways

  • G90 BMW M5 Sedan reveal is reportedly set for the last week of June.
  • G99 M5 Touring will follow later in the year.
  • M5 will feature the twin-turbo V8 hybrid system from the BMW XM, several paint options, and an all-electric drive mode.

The reveal of the all-new G90 BMW M5 Sedan is reportedly just a couple of short weeks away. BMW Blog reports that insiders have revealed the last week of June as the debut period, although an exact date was not provided. According to them, the sedan will be shown first and the G99 M5 Touring station wagon will be revealed later in the year. The sedan’s presentation is expected to take place online, but a public display is also scheduled for the M Festival in Poland next month. We assume that the reveal date won’t be June 20, as that’s when Bugatti reveals its Chiron successor, and we doubt BMW would want to compete with that.

Few Glimpses So Far

BMW has been teasing the M5 siblings in several videos documenting their development, but our first glimpse of the exterior design without any camouflage was through a sketch. If this claim that the M5 will be revealed within the month is true, we will doubtless start seeing the teaser campaign gather steam in the coming days and weeks.

Fortunately, leaks have given us enough to keep our impatient minds occupied. According to one from BMW China, the new M5 will be available in a choice of 10 exterior hues with at least four interior color schemes. Among these are beloved hues like Isle of Man Green (first seen on the G80 BMW M3) and Fire Red. But what of the engine?

Plug-In Hybrid Power And Practicality

BMW M CEO Frank van Meel has confirmed that the latest iteration of the “supercar in a suit” will be powered by the same sort of twin-turbocharged V8 hybrid system as the BMW XM SUV. While he confirmed the XM powertrain for the M5, he did not provide details. In the SUV, up to 738 horsepower and 739 lb-ft of torque are on offer, but the M5 is reportedly going to come in with a little less potency, topping out at around 718 hp. Still, with less weight than the XM, it will remain the more exciting choice. And as a plug-in hybrid (not a mild hybrid), it will offer a usable electric-only range. Hopefully, we will be able to confirm all of these uncertainties before July rolls around.
