Spy Shots Of The Mini Cooper JCW Convertible Ripping Up The Track

Key Takeaways

  • The Mini Convertible JCW version closely follows the Hardtop model’s design.
  • The familiar B48 2.0-liter engine 4-cylinder is expected to power the Convertible with more torque and 228 horsepower.
  • Despite competitive disadvantages, the new Mini JCW Convertible with a likely $45,000 price tag remains a compelling choice for enthusiasts.

The Mini Cooper S JCW Convertible just spent time putting some laps in as it prepares for its 2024 debut, and our spy photographers were able to snap some pics of the model as it blasted around the track. Covered in heavy black and yellow camo, the company doesn’t seem eager yet to reveal the car’s secrets. Thanks to some recent views of its Mini Cooper S JCW Hardtop sibling, we know what to expect.

The new Mini Cooper has done an incredible job building off the brand’s heritage while updating the model with meaningful technology and performance. It’s the most compelling Mini yet, and it’s only made better by the fact the Electric Hardtop now offers a decent amount of range for the first time. The Convertible will complete the trio, but everyone knows they’re really looking forward to hopped-up JCW models like this one.

Peeking Past The Camo

As has always been the case, the JCW version of the Convertible follows the Hardtop model very closely, and we don’t expect this time to be any different. In the front, you can see an exaggerated front bumper with plenty of venting and a massive opening for the radiator. Accentuating side skirts travel down the sides to the rear where you can see a bulging rear fender with a singular exhaust port just like on the Hardtop version.

It sports large wheels hiding red brake calipers, but overall the design is typically understated. This time around, it doesn’t appear the company is going with a hood scoop, but given the rest of the front end, we don’t think anyone will have an issue picking this one out of the crowd.

The Powertrain Is Familiar

It’s currently believed the JCW siblings will continue to be motivated by the familiar B48 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that’s been used in the models for years. In the past, it produced a solid 228 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque, and unfortunately, we don’t see power changing, though the model should be slightly more efficient and offer more torque.

Mini is on a roll and plans to keep it going with its growing lineup.

While these continue to be solid numbers for a FWD hatchback, they’ve started falling behind competitors substantially, especially its main rival, the VW GTI, which offers almost 20 more horsepower and over 30 more lb-ft of torque in its eighth generation. We also expect it to have a premium price in the $45,000 range, making it a hard sell, but if you’re looking to own one of the last combustion JCW models ever, then this is one of your last chances.
