Available in a single trim for the 2024 model year, wagon lovers have to settle for an All-Terrain pseudo-SUV to get their E-Class wagon thrills. The E450 4Matic All-Terrain will set you back $74,700, which we feel is a bargain given the combination of style, practicality, luxury, and uniqueness it possesses.

The E-Class Wagon Loses Its Best Feature For 2024

Despite options being limited, the E-Class All-Terrain still has two genuine competitors on the market from Audi and Volvo. The Mercedes is the most expensive of the trio and provides the least amount of customization as it’s sold in a single trim, while the Audi and Volvo can be had in two trims each. But in its favor, the E 450 4MATIC All-Terrain has the superior engine, with up to 375 hp on tap from its turbocharged inline-six.

While power and luxury may be enough to sway fans, the E-Class All-Terrain has lost its most endearing trait for this generation. Previously, the E-Class wagon could be outfitted with two rear-facing jump-seats in the cargo bay, turning it into a seven-seat wagon. Sadly, it appears the configuration has been removed for this generation, signaling the end of this trend.

Despite only being available in a single trim, there’s a fair amount of customization that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Of the 10 available paint colors, eight are no-cost options, and we’d spec Nautical Blue metallic to avoid the dull silvers that typically characterize Mercedes models. Four wheel choices are on offer, split evenly between 19- and 20-inch options, and while the 20-inch AMG designs ($850 extra) are stylish, we’re suckers for a little more sidewall, so the 19-inch twin five-spoke design gets our vote. A classy wagon should remain understated, so we’re happy to skip past the illuminated grille ($400) and Night Package ($200).

A Classy Cabin Awaits

Inside, you can choose from Black, Tonka Brown/Black, and Macchiato Beige/Black upholstery schemes, had in either MB-Tex synthetic leather (no-cost), genuine leather ($1,620), or quilted Nappa leather ($2,990). We’d also steer clear of the $1,500 MBUX Superscreen Package since luxury isn’t defined by how many screens you have, but $990 for the upgraded 12.3-inch 3D instrument cluster is a worthwhile upgrade.

Depending on your personal tastes, the $2,550 Pinnacle Trim equipment group may be a little expensive for the addition of an illuminated grille, head-up display, active ambient lighting, and heat- and noise-insulating glass, which is why we’d skip that and instead put $1,950 towards the Driver Assistance Package which adds 15 ADAS features to make your life easier.

All in, the total is $74,700 – a fair price in this segment for a much better alternative to a relatively lowly-specced GLE 450 SUV.
