A Le Mans Hybrid Is Coming To Your Next Car

Key Takeaways

  • Bosch plans to bring hybrid motorsports powertrains from the track to the road.
  • It offers a comprehensive hybrid system adaptable to automaker needs to save on investment costs.
  • Hybrids are gaining in popularity, with Bosch joining the game as a top parts supplier.

Bosch believes its hybrid motorsports powertrains have a place on the road in the near future. Speaking with Automotive News, the world’s largest auto supplier said it has a one-stop-shop solution that will allow it to adapt the system based on an automaker’s needs, offering them a proven high-performance system without needing to spend the millions necessary to create their own.

The system was created for use in the Grand Touring Prototype class of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, with the vehicles taking to the streets of Detroit last weekend in advance of the Detroit Grand Prix on June 2nd. Called the Le Mans Daytona Hybrid system, the company believes hundreds of thousands of race miles are the high-stress testing necessary to prove it can withstand the rigors of passenger vehicle life. Just don’t expect to see it in a Prius anytime soon.

Providing It All

As the exclusive provider of such a hybrid system, it currently gives manufacturers in the racing series invertors, braking systems, hybrid control units, electric motors, and more. All of these systems need to work with a variety of manufacturers, each with its own engine and one-of-four different chassis types. This close collaboration makes the company particularly suited to the rigors of adapting the system to a specific automaker’s needs. Plans call for adapting the entire system, not individual parts.

Its new production facility will bolster production of the scarce commodity.

“We are not looking at the individual component. We’re not a components supplier. We are a holistic systems provider. By knowing the whole system, you can right-size your component. You can increase the efficiency of the whole system by not oversizing or undersizing the component.”” – Mohammad Fatouraie, Director of Systems Engineering, Bosch

Hybrid Renaissance

Amid the cooling of EV market, it feels like almost every automaker is rediscovering the wonders of hybrid vehicles. Jeep is planning on reviving an iconic model as a hybrid. Toyota has recently been experiencing massive sales increases thanks to the plethora of hybrid models in its lineup. Mazda is planning a hybrid model for every vehicle in its lineup. This is only the beginning as Bosch gets into the game.

Bosch ranked number one last year when it came to worldwide parts sales to automakers, bringing in $49.14 billion in revenue according to Auto News, meaning they most likely have a solid relationship with nearly every automaker on the market. Fatouraie has said the company is currently in talks with several automakers about utilizing their system, though no names were given. These talks are still early on in the process, so any finished product would be years away, but the company is most likely eyeing higher-performance applications such as the M3.
