Chevrolet Thinks Corvette Zora Can Match The 1,000-HP Ferrari SF90

We expect great things from the ZR1, but can it rival the Ferrari SF90? Perhaps not, but the Zora certainly could.

Key Takeaways

  • Chevrolet Corvette prototypes have been spotted testing alongside a Ferrari SF90 Stradale.
  • GM could be benchmarking the ZR1 or Zora against the electrified Ferrari.
  • Most likely the Zora, which is expected to debut with a twin-turbo V8 and electric motors.

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is finally coming this summer, but it looks like General Motors still has plenty of development work to complete. A group of prototypes has been spotted testing alongside an unlikely companion from Maranello, namely a Ferrari SF90; Chevrolet certainly is aiming high with the ZR1.

First shared on the Facebook group C8 Corvette Owners (And Friends), the images show a selection of camouflaged test mules in a parking lot. The ZR1 is expected to wade into battle with an 850-horsepower, twin-turbocharged V8 engine. While that’s impressive, it’s not quite enough to match the Ferrari SF90. The Italian supercar is powered by a twin-turbo V8 with three electric motors for a combined output of 986 horsepower.

If It’s Not The ZR1, What Could It Be?

Then again, Chevrolet has shown with the Stingray that it can provide supercar-like acceleration with modest power figures, so it’s possible the ZR1 may be able to match the Ferrari on paper. Alternatively, GM may be using the Ferrari to benchmark the ZR1’s dynamic capabilities. Like the Corvette Z06, the ZR1 needs to deliver in the corners.

But there is another possibility. We could be looking at the long-awaited Corvette Zora, which is rumored to arrive with 1,000 horses – that would be a perfect match for the aforementioned Ferrari and other electrified supercars, such as the Lamborghini Revuelto. While the Corvette can’t hold a candle to those two in terms of badge appeal, the potential for comparable performance at a fraction of the price will undoubtedly attract plenty of buyers.

Zora Could Be A True Ferrari Rival

The Zora is also expected to use a twin-turbocharged V8 motor (known as the LT7HP1) but will rely on electrification. With all-wheel drive and the instant torque associated with electric motors, the Corvette could be transformed into the top-tier supercar it was always meant to be. The Zora, named for Zora Arkus-Duntov (the father of the Corvette), is expected to be the ultimate version of the C8 Corvette and is expected to arrive in 2026.
