Ferrari Working On Something More Hardcore Than Its LaFerrari Replacement

Key Takeaways

  • New F250 hypercar spy shots reveal what appears to be a rear spoiler similar to Ferrari’s famous front S-duct.
  • Sources anticipate only 599 models of the regular version and 199 drop-tops.
  • 30 extreme, track-only XX variants are rumored to be in the works.

New spy shots have emerged of what is internally known at Ferrari as the F250 – Maranello’s successor to the spectacular LaFerrari. At first glance, it appears that this prototype is identical to the one we first saw in production bodywork back in February. However, closer inspection at the rear reveals a bridging element between the two flanks, suggesting a wing of some sort; the earlier images showed a pronounced recess between the taillights.

Ferrari

Ferrari is an Italian manufacturer of sports cars, supercars, and luxury grand tourers founded by and named after Enzo Ferrari in 1939 – originally as Auto Avio Costruzioni due to legal complications with Alfa Romeo. Ferrari famously only produced roadgoing sports cars as a means of funding its racing exploits, which include multiple F1 World Championships and wins at Le Mans and various other prestigious races. Today, Ferrari is one of the most valuable brand names in the world, limiting production of its highly-sought-after models to maintain desirability, which is in no short supply when they’re powered by some of the world’s most advanced V6, V8, and V12 engines.

Other sightings of earlier F250 development mules had also shown a much more crude vehicle with a gargantuan rear wing. However, the wing we see below is less extreme, so what is actually going on? Is Ferrari working on two cars? According to our spies, yes.

F250 XX Coming, Say Sources

Insiders say that only 599 examples of the new hypercar will be offered, with another 199 Aperta or Spider drop-tops after that. Those same sources also report that 30 hardcore XX track-biased models are coming, and these will be true XX models, unlike the SF90 twins, meaning that they won’t be street-legal but will be eligible for use at Ferrari’s exclusive XX track days alongside vehicles like the 599XX and LaFerrari FXX-K.

This means one of two things. Either our latest sightings are showing the true, final production bodywork and the F250 replacement is getting a wing, or the car we’re looking at is the XX. Considering how extreme the SF90 XX looks, the former option seems likely. If so, it appears that the F250 will use a rear aerodynamic aid that works like an S-duct in reverse. It’s also possible that increased aerodynamic stability could come from the exhaust, according to another patent CarBuzz discovered.

It can act as both a wing and a spoiler, and the mechanics required to make it work would be rather basic.

Unlikely A V12

Ferrari is famously secretive about absolutely everything it does, so we have to rely on intellectual property offices once again. We have unearthed three potential names so far: La Rossa, Drake, and F80, each of which would be symbolic. La Rossa, or The Red, is a simple but elegant name that suits Ferrari better than any other brand, while Drake could be a nod to one of Enzo Ferrari’s nicknames that meant “The Dragon.” Finally, F80 would be a racecar-style name in honor of Ferrari’s 80th anniversary, which Maranello is celebrating in 2027. We don’t expect to wait that long for the LaF successor, so F80 is probably reserved for another special edition.

As for what will power the hypercar, our sources and various spy videos have not indicated a V12. Instead, a hybrid V6 is expected, likely because Ferrari does not want to add turbos to its V12 yet but is happy to do so with the less traditional configuration. Bugatti can use electricity to make up the power on its even more scarce Chiron successor, but Ferrari requires a nimble chassis for its halo hypercar. Our sources suggest a reveal will happen this year, but as a low-volume Fezza, every example is likely already long spoken for.
