Volkswagen ID. 2all Will Arrive Looking Even Better Than The Concept

Key Takeaways

  • Production-ready version of the Volkswagen ID. 2 will arrive in 2025 with “even better” styling than the concept.
  • Reveal is due to take place later this year; the compact electric hatchback will reach dealers in 2025.
  • A high-performance GTI version will follow in 2026.

Remember the delightful Volkswagen ID. 2all concept unveiled last year? Well, VW chief designer Andreas Mindt told Autocar that the production version, due to be revealed later this year, will look “even better” than the stylish concept. Sales of the €25,000 ($27,000) EV are expected to start in 2025. Mindt and his design team fought to keep the design as close as possible to the concept, with similar dimensions and styling.

The final design is basically complete and is now frozen, which means very few (if any) changes will be made between now and its launch. “It’s even better [than the concept],” said the designer. “I really like it, and it’s one of the reasons I’m so optimistic for our future.” Mindt adds that he was relentless in getting the design he wanted: “I could almost force everybody around me by saying: ‘Look at the feedback. We have to turn this into reality. Whatever you say – money saving, whatever – I want this design.'”

Compact Dimensions, Generously Sized Cabin

Despite the VW Polo exterior dimensions, the ID. 2all is deceptively spacious. Based on the MEB Entry architecture, the electric hatch will be the first vehicle to be underpinned by the platform. With 102.4 inches between the front and rear wheels, the wheelbase is slightly shorter than the Golf 8’s. This is despite it being considerably shorter than the Golf. The trunk is much larger, with 17.3 cubic feet of packing space (46.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down), more than the Golf’s 13.4 cubic feet.

The front-wheel drive ID. 2all will produce up to 223 horsepower courtesy of an electric motor on the front axle. The estimated range (likely calculated on the WLTP cycle) is pegged around the 280-mile mark. Those seeking more power will be pleased to know a high-performance GTI will follow in 2026. Volkswagen has not shared power outputs, but we expect it to offer around 280 horses or more. While based on the production version of the ID. 2all, Mindt says it will feature unique styling that is more confident. “It’s matching 100% to our brand values: it will be stable and likable with our secret sauce – but in a different way.”

On Track For 2025 Debut, Despite Slowing EV Demand

Several reports suggested that Volkswagen would delay the compact EV following the relaxation of Euro 7 emissions legislation. While this means that Volkswagen can still sell combustion-engined vehicles like the Golf and Polo, it’s full steam ahead for the ID. 2, which will be unveiled later this year. Interestingly, the automaker recently announced that it would invest billions, previously earmarked for electrification, into keeping its combustion engines competitive. Even though it will be positioned beneath the ID.3, the ID. 2 will act as a trendsetter for future VW interiors.

Volkswagen’s US EV plans might be in doubt, but the brand is pushing ahead with a cheap EV for a 2027 launch in Europe.

Following a generally negative reception to its recent interiors, which relied on touchscreens and touch-capacitive controls, the ID. 2 will see the return of conventional dials and buttons. Despite its positioning within the VW lineup, we can expect high-quality materials to provide buyers with a premium interior. Let’s not forget that the little VW will also have a configurable instrumentation cluster with retro-inspired designs referencing some of VW’s most iconic interiors. Whether the compact EV makes its way to the United States remains to be seen. After all, the larger ID.3 isn’t offered here, with buyers having to opt for the ID.4 crossover if they want a VW-badged electric car. Let’s not forget that Volkswagen is also developing an even smaller EV, priced around $21,000, which will be positioned below the production ID. 2all.
