Fisker Predecessor Karma Recalls All Its American Cars

Key Takeaways

  • Karma Automotive issues recall for 269 Revero sports sedans.
  • Recall related to faulty turn signals that remain active for longer than necessary.
  • Dealers are required to replace the headlights and perform a software update to rectify the problem.

Karma Automotive has recalled 269 examples of the Revero sports sedan due to an issue concerning the turn signals. The recall encompasses several models, namely the GT, GTS, GS-6, GS-6s, and GS-6L, all built between July 16, 2019 and December 21, 2022.

According to the NHTSA recall report, the Revero’s turn signals could fail, increasing the risk of a crash. An issue with the indicator circuit could cause the turn signal in the front headlamp to remain active for longer than the driver requires due to a faulty message from the Vehicle Control Module (VCM). Because the fault is intermittent, it is “not repeatable in a consistent manner on the same vehicle.”

Faulty Turn Signals Increase The Risk Of A Crash

Karma estimates that the issue occurs, on average, at a rate of 2.3 – 3.8 times per vehicle per month. The driver is made aware of the problem by a fast-repeating turn signal and a warning in the instrument cluster. The NHTSA warns that a crash could happen if the warning is ignored. While this doesn’t sound like a big deal, it could result in a misunderstanding, which, at speed, could be dangerous. Other road users could assume the Karma is turning because of the signal and turn into its path. The automaker says no injuries, deaths, or property damage is related to the defect.

While the problem can be temporarily rectified by switching the vehicle on and off or by normal operation of the turn signals, a permanent fix is required to fix it once and for all. Karma says dealers have been instructed to fit new headlights to affected vehicles and update the software – at no cost to the owner. Several customers have complained of the issue in recent months, with 13 cars brought into dealerships. 98 customers also reported the issue via Karma Cloud Services communication data.

New Karma Models Finally On The Way

Owners of the affected Karma models will receive notification letters mailed on July 25. The company can also be contacted at 1-855-288-6109, and the NHTSA recall number is 24V-379. The Karma Revero and GS-6 models started out in life as the Fisker Karma, a svelte-looking electrified sports sedan that debuted back in 2011. A Chinese company purchased the design, tooling, and manufacturing facility in 2014 and renamed the company Karma. Since then, the automaker has been building the hybrid sedan, albeit in very small numbers.

The Spanish supercar maker will offer “luxury and technological” upgrades.

But the Revero and GS-6 aren’t the end of the line for Karma. Last year, the automaker revealed the striking Kaveya electric grand tourer. With striking styling, a 180 mph top speed, and the ability to sprint to 60 mph in less than three seconds, it could be the automaker’s ticket to the big time. In March, the automaker previewed the Gyesera, an all-electric sedan that will likely replace the GS-6.
