Tesla Finally Adding Key Navigation Feature

Key Takeaways

  • Tesla may add “avoid highways” to navigation according to Elon Musk’s recent comments.
  • Other updates include the return of Smart Summon and improvements to HVAC, headlights, and the Tesla Arcade.
  • The timeline is uncertain as Tesla deals with ongoing problems and investigations.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference, which is why Tesla owners will be happy to hear the company will most likely be adding “avoid highways” to navigation according to Elon’s gaming stream. First reported by Teslarati, yesterday Tesla CEO Elon Musk was streaming video games on X when a commenter asked him if the feature could be added to a future update. Without giving it a second thought, the CEO says, “Yeah, sure.” and then moved on to the next topic.

Tesla

Tesla, Inc. is an American electric vehicle manufacturer largely attributed to driving the EV revolution. Through the Model S and subsequent products, Tesla has innovated and challenged industry conventions on numerous fronts, including over-the-air updates, self-driving technology, and automotive construction methods. Tesla is considered the world’s most valuable car brand as of 2023, and the Model Y the world’s best-selling car in the same year, but the brand’s greatest achievement is arguably the Supercharger network of EV charging stations.

While this is hardly concrete proof the feature is on the way, this is Elon we’re talking about, and he’s well-known for interacting with his customers and taking their suggestions to heart. Not to mention, this wouldn’t exactly be a complicated feature to add to a Model 3 or a Model S seeing as Apple and Google Maps have had it for years.

Recently Announced New Features

While customers will enjoy not having to fire up Waze to avoid highways in the future, there have been plenty of other updates rolled out and announced that customers are sure to love even more. The two biggest were the re-announcement of Smart Summon and Banish (Autopark) returning to vehicles in the next few months after they were axed from models in the transition away from ultrasonic sensors.

With the software update 2024.20, vehicles were made better overnight with improvements to HVAC, new capabilities for the adaptive headlights, and improvements to the Tesla Arcade. That last one is a tad bittersweet, as the company recently announced it was getting rid of Steam support on new Model S and Model X vehicles due to hardware updates.

Elon Musk Has A Lot On His Plate Right Now

It’s best to temper your expectations on timelines for any new features until the company is able to sort through its own problems. This hasn’t been Tesla’s year, with one problem after another starting with its worst first-quarter earnings report in years. While all companies hit a snag eventually as they grow, the layoffs appeared to be particularly brutal, and at the same time there were law suits to manage.

A long-awaited feature may be right around the corner.

It’s being investigated for wire and securities fraud due to allegedly misleading investors and consumers about the capabilities of the system. This may have ramifications for the upcoming Tesla shareholder vote that could see the company move its incorporation to Texas and determining if Elon should become the most well-paid CEO of all time. Until all of this is finally sorted through, we feel like you’ll be stuck on highways for a bit longer.
