BMW M Teases Something “Very Special” For Pebble Beach

Key Takeaways

  • BMW M teases a surprise reveal at Pebble Beach.
  • “Very special surprise” is unlikely to be the new M5 or other recently refreshed M cars.
  • New reveal follows exciting concepts like the Skytop and Concept Touring Coupé.

BMW has told the world that it has “a very special surprise you will not want to miss” coming to The Lodge at Pebble Beach on Thursday, August 15, as part of Monterey Car Week. All we know is that this will be the world premiere of “the latest release from BMW M,” but let’s consider the possibilities. One of the most hotly anticipated M cars of the year is the all-new BMW M5, which the automaker said this week is “finished testing and coming soon.” August is still two months away, and as exciting as the M5 will doubtless be, its arrival is not “a very special surprise,” so we expect the M5 to be revealed long before the Pebble Beach festivities kick off. What else might it be?

BMW

BMW is a German luxury car and motorbike manufacturer and current owner of Mini, Rolls-Royce, and Alpina. With roots dating back to 1913 as Rapp Motorenwerke, it officially became Bayerische Motoren Werke in 1922 as a manufacturer of aircraft engines. BMW’s first car was built in 1928 when it built the Austin 7 under license from Dixi, which was called the BMW 3/15. BMW grew into a manufacturer of premium and luxury automobiles, launching iconic nameplates like the 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series, and is today known as one of the leading luxury automakers in the world, while the BMW M division is hailed as a leading manufacturer of performance cars.

Your Guess Is As Good As Ours

We know that BMW will not produce a Z4 M due to overwhelming cost ramifications and a low take rate for the existing non-M model. The updated 1 Series, 2 Series, 3 Series, and 4 Series have all been revealed, while the 5 Series and 7 Series are hardly due for any updates. Similarly, the M2, M3, and M4 were all refreshed this year. What about special versions of those cars? The G81 M3 Touring won’t be sold in the US and has been out for ages, while the M3 CS and M4 CS are already on the market. An M2 CS debut is only expected next year, so that’s out of the question, too.

An M3 CS Touring has also been rumored, but like the M2, this is only expected to break cover in 2025. That leaves us with the 8 Series, which is aging. However, we doubt that BMW would consider it a “very special surprise.” Our best guess is that BMW M will be showing some sort of concept. Could BMW reveal an M version of the stunning Skytop concept? We don’t see why not.

Demand Exists For Expensive Bimmers

Considering the setting in which BMW M CEO Frank van Meel will unveil the new car, we can only assume that it will be something high-end. BMW has shown increased interest in low-volume vehicles after the success of the reincarnated 3.0 CSL and the positive reactions to last year’s Pebble Beach reveal, the Concept Touring Coupé. The former reached production and sold out, while the latter has been rumored to enter production, as has the new Skytop concept. We’d love to see an M-enhanced version of either concept, and Monterey Car Week, the best car show in the world, would be the ideal setting. With August still some way off, we expect to get more insight from further teasers in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
