1,000-HP Toyota GR Yaris Ready To Break Records

Key Takeaways

  • Lamspeed Racing tuned a Toyota GR Yaris to a staggering 1,000 horsepower
  • The tuned GR Yaris registered 887.8 horsepower at the hubs.
  • The company is eyeing a new GR Yaris world record in the quarter mile.

Some Australian mad lads have managed to squeeze 1000 horsepower out of the 1.6-liter turbocharged Toyota GR Yaris, and we don’t think the world is ready. Lamspeed Racing, a tuner from down under that specializes in serious upgrades to Japanese engines, has been working on this little hot hatch for the past few years with much success. Like others before it, the company wants to see how far the little platform can be pushed, and they aren’t stopping till they find its limits.

For the uninitiated, the GR Yaris and its GR Corolla cousin are two of the coolest vehicles Toyota has released in the past 20 years. The company took economy hatches and decided to boost their 3-cylinder engines to the moon, producing up to 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque for Japanese domestic market (JDM) models. Toyota then paired them with only a 6-speed manual (well, until it didn’t) and sent them on their way to fight in the trenches of the hot hatch wars where tuners like Lamspeed were able to get their evil genius hands on them.

Big Power, Little Car

The tuner posted its success on social media a few days ago, thanking a whole host of others for help, and planning to get to the racetrack as soon as possible to test it out against turbocharged Corvettes and Mustangs. In the post, you can see a dynamometer readout that says the vehicle made 887.8 horsepower and 573.5 lb-ft of torque at 8,730 and 7,701 rpm respectively, and did so while connected to a hub dyno as opposed to the more common inertia dyno.

This means the vehicle didn’t exactly make these numbers at the wheels, but those results should only be marginally worse than actual engine output. According to CarScoops, the crew then factored in a conservative powertrain loss of 11.3 percent to arrive at the 1,000 engine horsepower number, though that’s just an educated guess. In reality, the engine may make more.

Breaking The GR Corolla 1/4 Mile Record

Last year, the tuner took the 500 horsepower version of this car to the drag strip and completed a 9.864 second 1/4 mile pass at 142 mph to set the GR Yaris quarter mile world record. It then competed in the World Time Attack Challenge (WTAC 2023) and set another world record by completing a lap in 1:34.6. This was achieved in a vehicle that was driven to and from the events and still features a full interior with air conditioning.

The legendary Japanese tuner is offering crate engines with less turbo lag for one of the most desirable hot hatches on the market.

Upgrades then consisted of a Lamspeed Long Engine, turbo kit, billet intake manifold, fuel system, Motec GR Yaris PNP and C125 Tuned by Armour Motorsports, Full Hardrace Suspensions Catalogue, Drenth Gearbox with custom ratios, and Hypertune Intercooler. We imagine much was changed to get it to this new 1,000-horsepower number, but the base not the base engine. We can’t wait to see what the tuner can accomplish this time. We just recommend it pay extra special attention on those quick-shifting runs.
