Corvette Gets A New Boss

Key Takeaways

  • Tony Roma, the new executive chief engineer for Global Corvette and Performance Cars at GM, has a solid history of working on performance cars like the Corvette.
  • With experience working on Cadillacs and being a certified GM Level 6 driver, Roma’s leadership is likely to bring positive changes to the Corvette lineup.
  • Roma’s racing background and appreciation for Corvettes, combined with his new role, suggest exciting prospects for the future of Corvette performance.

General Motors is making some leadership changes for its performance cars. Tony Roma, who is currently chief engineer for the Cadillac Celestiq, will now be the executive chief engineer for the new Global Corvette and Performance Cars team, which includes the iconic Chevrolet Corvette.

The change goes into effect on July 1 as Tadge Juechter retires after 47 years at GM. Roma not only succeeds Juechter, he also takes over for the Luxury and Performance Cars team that is currently let by Brandon Vivian, who is moving to a new position within the company.

A Performance Car History

This isn’t Roma’s first crack at Corvette. He has previously worked on the Corvette along with a wide range of Cadillacs including the CTS, ATS, and Celestiq, which started production early this year. He was also involved with the V-Series and Blackwing, which shows he has a handle on how to build a performance car. The current Corvette is due for an interior upgrade that has reportedly been delayed, so we’ll have to see if Roma’s presence makes those changes happen any sooner.

Roma also has a garage full of Corvettes including the C4 ZR1, C6 ZR1, and C8 Z06 along with a CTS-V Wagon. The man clearly appreciates the segment. It’s not just about driving these on the road, either, as Roma has solid racing chops.

“As a car enthusiast and racer, I feel a strong connection to the whole Corvette team and our fans around the world.” – Tony Roma

Chevrolet Thinks Corvette Zora Can Match The 1,000-HP Ferrari SF90

We expect great things from the ZR1, but can it rival the Ferrari SF90? Perhaps not, but the Zora certainly could.

He is a certified GM Level 6 driver, which is the highest rating one can earn, and is certified to drive on the famous Nürburgring during exclusive industry events. He’s already logged more than 1,500 laps there and was participating in a race at the Nürburgring when he found out about his new role. Sounds like the Corvette is in good hands.
