Another Sedan Bites The Dust

Key Takeaways

  • The 2024 Volvo S60 is being discontinued in the US after five years in production.
  • Production at the Ridgeville, South Carolina, plant will stop at the end of June.
  • Volvo is following the trend of automakers prioritizing SUVs over sedans.

The US market is about to lose yet another sedan, as CarBuzz can confirm the 2024 Volvo S60 will officially be discontinued in this part of the world. “Volvo Cars is ending production of the S60 sedan at its plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina at the end of June 2024, after five years in production at the plant. The S60 will continue to be produced in Daqing, China, for China and Australia,” a Volvo spokesperson said.

This news comes as the 2025 Volvo EX90 begins rolling off the assembly line in South Carolina. The EX90 is the first Volvo electric vehicle to be produced in the United States; it will be built alongside the Polestar 3, which is mechanically similar. Adding a three-row SUV to its electric lineup is an important step for Volvo, but it comes at the expense of what is currently the brand’s second-cheapest car in the US.

Another Sedan Bites The Dust

The S60’s death doesn’t come as a surprise, since it was far from Volvo’s bestseller in the US. Volvo only sold 10,357 units of the S60 in 2023. By comparison, 39,920 units of the XC90 were sold while Volvo shifted 39,702 units of the SC60. SUVs and crossovers are clearly more important models in the US for the Chinese-owned Swedish marque. This follows trends from other automakers, who have also moved away from sedans in favor of lifted utility vehicles. Ford began the trend of discontinuing sedans and General Motors is not far behind, recently killing off the Chevrolet Malibu.

Yet another popular sedan is being killed off to meet changing customer demands.

Even in Europe, where hatchback and wagon sales are stronger, Volvo has struggled to keep these models alive. The UK market only offers crossovers, with the V60, V90, and S60 all being discontinued as of last year. We figured a similar strategy would follow in the US, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the S90, V90, and V60 models followed suit.

What Replaces The S60?

Though the EX90 will technically replace the S60 on the production line in South Carolina, its $76,695 starting price means it’s not meant to fill a similar role in the market. The S60 started at $42,000, making it Volvo’s second-cheapest model, above only the XC40 ($40,100). The upcoming 2025 Volvo EX30 EV is set to be the Swedish automaker’s least expensive model, with an attractive starting MSRP of $34,950.

Unfortunately, the EX30 is set to temporarily be imported from China until Volvo’s factory in Belgium is operational. Thanks to President Biden’s recent tariffs on Chinese EVs, the EX30 will be hit with a 100% tax when it arrives in the US. Volvo has not commented publicly on how this will impact the EX30’s availability in the US, but it’s likely to push back its arrival. Until then, the XC40 will represent Volvo’s cheapest model.

Volvo will end S60 production to build the EX90 electric SUV. Is this the right move?
