The GT2 has earned a reputation as the ‘widowmaker’ and this one is unlikely to ever return to the roads

  • The driver of a rare 911 GT2 RS was attempting to overtake a large truck.
  • After hitting a curb, the car slammed into the side of the semi and skidded on a patch of grass.
  • Porsche 911 models have been involved in several high-profile crashes in recent months.

A rare Porsche 911 GT2 RS met a tragic end in Melbourne, Australia, following a reckless crash. The incident was captured on a widely circulated dashcam video.

The accident happened next to the United Petroleum West Gate South site, near the intersection of the West Gate Freeway and Prohasky Street. Video uncovered by Carscoops on social media shows the rare, silver 911 just after it overtakes and speeds past the car with the dashcam. The driver is then seen swerving to the right, seemingly attempting to overtake a truck carrying a large shipping container.

Unfortunately for the driver of the 911, there is no lane to the right of the truck, and while attempting to speed past, the Porsche slams into the curb and bounces into the side of the truck. It then slides across a grassy area before coming to a stop. Just seconds after the crash, a BMW X5 police car comes into view and pulls up alongside the wrecked 911 and the damaged truck.

A photo shared online reveals the extent of the damage done to the car. The front quarter panel of the GT2 RS has been torn to shreds, and the wheel also looks damaged. One of the wing mirrors has been ripped off, the side skirt is damaged, and a side air intake is missing. The passenger-side rear wheel and hub, including suspension components and brakes, have been belted off the car. The rear bumper has also been ruined.

Porsche 911 GT2 RS models are rare on Australian roads, and depending on mileage, they typically sell for between AU$600,000 and AU$800,000 (~$396,000 – ~$529,000). Carscoops has been told the driver of the car was allegedly uninsured, although we have yet to verify this information.

Several pricey Porsche 911 models have been caught up in high-profile crashes in recent months. In April, a 911 GT3 RS crashed into a river in Washington state, while in February, a 911 GT2 RS was crashed on a Florida highway. The GT2 is called the ‘widowmaker’ for a reason.
