BMW X5 Silver Anniversary Edition Is The Most Capable Off-Road X Car Ever

Key Takeaways

  • 2025 BMW X5 Silver Anniversary celebrates 25 years since first X5 was produced.
  • New xOffroad mode increases capability off the beaten path.
  • Numerous style and tech improvements aim to encourage off-road driving.
  • Around 1,000 units to be made; MSRP set at $81,075 (including destination).

The first BMW X5 rolled off the Spartanburg factory floor in South Carolina on September 1, 1999, and as it approaches its 25th anniversary, the Sports Activity Vehicle is getting a limited-edition variant that adds a touch more capability and style than usual. The BMW X5 Silver Anniversary Edition is based on the 2025 X5 xDrive40i and is only available in a single color for the exterior – BMW Individual Lime Rock Grey metallic.

Inside, the cabin gets access to a choice of Black, Cognac, Coffee, or Silverstone Sensafin (a so-called vegan leather alternative). Borrowed from the X5 M60i and X5 M Competition is carbon fiber accent trim. You also get Extended Shadowline Trim from the M Sport catalog on the outside, meaning the window trims, roof rails, fender accents, and illuminated kidney grille are finished in gloss black.

Improved Off-Road Tech And Greater Style

Other highlights include the addition of Shadowline headlights and taillights, as well as 20-inch M Star-spoke bi-color wheels, but not everything is from the X5’s M Sport Package; the bumpers and rocker panels are instead Sport Design elements with aluminum accents to signify a slightly more capable off-roader. At the rear, a Silver Anniversary Edition badge appears on the tailgate, which is matched by a similar plaque on the center console. Also included is the xOffroad Package not currently offered on any other BMW X model.

This adjusts vehicle settings based on terrain through the Driver Experience Control switch on the center console. Drivers can switch between xSnow, xSand, xGravel, and xRocks modes, each offering different settings for ride height, transmission shift points, throttle mapping, traction control, and so on. As you might have guessed, this X5 is fitted with dual-axle air suspension. It also gets a mechanical rear differential lock and underbody skid plates, as well as an xOffroad View that tells the driver about ground clearance, roll tendency, and the gradient of the hill or incline. This is supported by an xOffroad camera that provides views of multiple angles at speeds below 22 mph.

BMW Wants You to Go Off-Road

BMWs are typically seen as pavement pounders rather than true off-roaders, but BMW seems to be serious about taking the SAV off the beaten path by offering a discount on dealer-installed General Grabber all-terrain tires. BMW also provides roof racks, a hardy mat for the luggage compartment, and all-weather floor mats. Despite this, you won’t feel like you’re in a watered-down luxury car, as the Silver Anniversary Edition gets a Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system, remote engine start, Live Cockpit Professional with a full-color head-up display and augmented reality navigation, and heating for the front seats, armrests, and steering wheel.

The 2025 BMW X5 Silver Anniversary Edition is limited to roughly 1,000 units and carries a base MSRP of $79,900 (excluding $1,175 for destination and handling). Production begins in August.
