Xpeng’s Mona M03 Is The New Aero King

Key Takeaways

  • Xpeng unveils the new Mona M03 electric vehicle with a claimed Cd figure of 0.194.
  • Small sedan is more aerodynamic than the Lucid Air, Mercedes EQS, and Tesla Model S.
  • Expected to have a starting price of around $20,700.

Xpeng has whipped the covers off the new Mona M03, an affordable and compact electric sedan that takes aim at the Tesla Model 3. At first glance, the Mona M03 appears to be a stylish but perfectly normal EV. However, Xpeng claims it is the most aerodynamic production sedan ever, with a claimed Cd figure of 0.194. That’s remarkable and places it ahead of other slippery four-doors, such as the YangWang U6 (0.196 Cd), Lucid Air (Cd = 0.197), and Mercedes EQS Sedan (Cd = 0.20).

The automaker credits this exceptional aerodynamic performance to several unique design touches. This includes specially designed wheels (Cd = 0.013) and an active air intake for the front bumper (Cd = 0.023). These innovations have improved the vehicle’s efficiency by up to 15%, resulting in an extra 37 miles of electric range.

Not Much Power, But Impressive Range Estimates

According to the Chinese publication Fast Technology, the Mona M03 will be available with two drivetrains. The entry-level model will gain motivation from a 188-horsepower electric motor, with another variant offering 215 hp. The lithium iron phosphate blade batteries will be sourced from FinDreams, a subsidiary of automotive giant BYD (Build Your Dreams).

While the power figures leave much to be desired, the Mona M03 is surprisingly light for an electric car. Estimates from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology estimates show three weight figures, presumably for different variants: 3,595 lbs, 3,662 lbs, and 3,839 lbs. As a result, we expect performance to be respectable, if not brisk.

Okay, So How Much Does It Cost?

Unfortunately, there are no range figures as yet. Early estimates (on the CLTC cycle) suggest the sleek sedan will be able to cover 342 miles between charges. However, with the low curb weight and impressive aerodynamic trickery, we wouldn’t be surprised if turns out even higher than that.

The real kicker is the price. Despite the handsome styling and remarkable aero technology, the new Xpeng Mona M03 is estimated to arrive with a starting price of ¥150,000 ($20,700). That’s about $18,000 cheaper than an entry-level Tesla Model 3 and nearly $8,000 less than a Nissan Leaf, the most affordable EV currently available in the USA. However, the Xpeng will never make its way to the United States, as Chinese-built EVs are subject to a new 102% tariff that makes them impractical. That’s a shame, as US consumers desperately need an affordable EV. With any luck, Western brands will soon be able to match the Chinese and their unbeatable value for money when it comes to electric cars.
