New Rivian R1T With Gobs Of Power Coming to Pikes Peak

Key Takeaways

  • The Rivian R1T aims to break its own record at Pikes Peak with more power and improvements.
  • The R1T boasts 1,025 hp, 1,198 lb-ft torque, completing 0-60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds.
  • Gardner Nichols, senior engineer at Rivian, will drive the R1T at Pikes Peak.

Following the new R1 range’s debut earlier this month, the second-generation Rivian R1T is testing its mettle at this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Contending in the 102nd running of the popular hill climb competition is the top-spec quad-motor R1T, defending the record set by the previous model last year.

The R1T set the record for the newly introduced Electric Production Truck/Van division last year as the only entrant. It finished the 12.42-mile course in 11 minutes and 23.983 seconds. As the only contender again in this class, the second-generation R1T aims to break that record with more power and all other improvements employed in the new model.

Pikes Peak Contender

Like the top-spec production R1T, Rivian’s Pikes Peak contender comes with new motors that are manufactured and engineered in-house. This setup has a combined output of 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 lb-ft of torque, more powerful than last year’s contender. Equipped with 22-inch road wheels, the new R1T can complete a 0-60 mph sprint in less than 2.5 seconds, plus a quarter-mile run of 10.5 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph.

Despite competing in the Electric Production Truck/Van class, Rivian’s Pikes Peak entry has a modified cabin, particularly a roll cage, a stripped-out interior, and a single bucket racing seat. The exterior gets a wrap inspired by Rivian’s cell animation graphics.

Exciting Weekend For EV Trucks

The new R1T may be the only contender in its class, but there’s another high-powered truck in the festivities. Ford’s wildly designed 1,400-hp SuperTruck, a modified version of the F-150 Lightning, is also competing but in the Open Class.

Rivian’s facelifted R1T just hit the market. While its looks and capability as a truck are impressive, its party piece is its supercar-beating speed.

Gardner Nichols, senior performance test engineer at Rivian, will be at the helm of the R1T during the competition this weekend. The 102nd Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will officially commence on July 23, 2024.

“It’s a dream to come back to Pikes Peak in our new Quad R1T. Power is one thing, but the torque control at each wheel with Quad-Motor helps maximize performance,” Nichols remarked.
