Ford Mk1 Escort And RS200 Back From The Dead As Epic Recreations And Continuation Models Backed By Ford

Key Takeaways

  • Boreham Motorworks will revive iconic Ford classics as genuine recreations with continuation VINs.
  • The company has only confirmed the first two models, the RS200 and Mk1 Escort, with a plan to introduce at least five.
  • No details regarding potential drivetrain options have been revealed.

Boreham Motorworks, the motorsport division of the DRVN Automotive Group, has signed an agreement with Ford to create an exclusive series of continuation classic cars that will appeal to enthusiasts. Blue Oval fans will be delighted to know that the iconic Ford RS200 will return on the fortieth anniversary of its debut. Earlier this year, the RS200 nameplate was trademarked by Ford, and at the time, we thought Ford was reviving the road-going rally car for the electric era. However, the arrival of the recreation models makes more sense now.

Created to dominate the fearsome Group B rally class, Ford produced 200 road-going examples of the RS200. Since then, it has become a highly collectible car, with some selling for as much as $500,000. The mid-engined rally car channeled 250 horsepower through all four wheels, courtesy of a turbocharged 1.8-liter engine. With lightweight bodywork, the RS200 was (and still is) a very rapid machine. And it won’t be the only classic Ford to be revived.

Not Just Another Restomod

The Mk1 Escort, first introduced in the late ’60s, will also return. It’s worth mentioning that Boreham Motorworks hasn’t merely attained licensing to produce restomods. These are genuine recreations, replete with continuation VINs. The Mk1 will be the first of five Ford recreations, with the company noting that it has been “entrusted to continue some of Ford Motor Company’s most historically significant road, race, and rally icons” that are both sympathetic and accurate to the original models.

Boreham Motorworks has not shared additional information, such as the mechanical details, but notes that these vehicles will be produced in limited numbers. The automaker is currently accepting registrations for both the Mk1 Escort and RS200. Given that they are continuation vehicles and not restomods, we’re guessing that combustion engines will power these vehicles. Then again, a fully electric version wouldn’t be out of the question – battery-powered restomods have become increasingly popular.

“We are thrilled to embark on this journey with Ford Motor Company and kickstart a series that will redefine and remaster these icons of the past. We aim to redefine automotive innovation and push the boundaries regarding driver engagement and design. Our shared commitment to this incredible project will create an outstanding analog driving experience and leave a lasting legacy for the true petrolhead.”

More Ford Recreations Are On The Horizon

Boreham has taken some creative license with the styling; both cars appear to have modern LED lighting with contemporary lighting signatures. Will Ford, General Manager of Ford Performance Motorsports, says the partnership with Boreham Motorworks and DRVN will bring the automaker’s most iconic “historical nameplates to life for the modern era.”

As mentioned, Boreham plans to introduce at least five recreations. So far, we know the Mk1 Escort and RS200 will make an appearance, but what else is in the pipeline? Both the aforementioned models were created by Ford UK, so it’s safe to assume the remaining models would come from the same stable, or at least Ford Europe. If that’s the case, we are hopeful to see the return of the Capri 2.8 Injection, Escort Cosworth, Sierra Cosworth, and the Mk2 Escort RS2000. It’s worth noting that there’s another appealing Escort restomod in the works. MST will introduce a 2.8-liter Mk1 restomod later this year, with 360 hp and a six-speed sequential transmission.
