Here’s An Exclusive Sneak Peak At Ferrari’s Next Hypercar

Key Takeaways

  • Piero Ferrari hints that the LaFerrari successor, codenamed F250, is coming soon.
  • Ferrari collectors have already been sent special teaser packages previewing hypercar’s silhouette.
  • Expect the LaFerrari replacement to have more than 1,000 horsepower and cutting-edge aerodynamics.

It’s been 11 years since the gorgeous (but oddly-named) LaFerrari debuted, and while the automaker is broadening its horizons with the Purosangue SUV and upcoming electric vehicles, there’s been no word on a new halo car – until now. Speaking to Top Gear, Piero Ferrari, vice chairman and son of the late Enzo Ferrari, hinted that a LaFerrari successor (known as the F250) would arrive soon.

Ferrari

Ferrari is an Italian manufacturer of sports cars, supercars, and luxury grand tourers founded by and named after Enzo Ferrari in 1939 – originally as Auto Avio Costruzioni due to legal complications with Alfa Romeo. Ferrari famously only produced roadgoing sports cars as a means of funding its racing exploits, which include multiple F1 World Championships and wins at Le Mans and various other prestigious races. Today, Ferrari is one of the most valuable brand names in the world, limiting production of its highly-sought-after models to maintain desirability, which is in no short supply when they’re powered by some of the world’s most advanced V6, V8, and V12 engines.

“Every ten years, we have one. Something will come. I know what it is,” said Ferrari, not revealing any juicy details. Seeing as there was an 11-year gap between the Enzo and LaFerrari, it’s possible the new car could make its debut this year or in 2025. If that wasn’t confirmation enough that we’d see the new model soon, a Ferrari collector from Australia posted a trio of images to Instagram showcasing a decorative Ferrari box within which is a metal plaque bearing the silhouette of the forthcoming hypercar.

They captioned the post, “If you know, you know, count down is on! Un vero proprietario qualification.” The last bit translates as “A true qualified owner” alluding to the fact that you have to qualify before Ferrari will offer you its most exclusive models. We’ve seen such boxes before, namely for the LaFerrari and LaFerrari Aperta, and if these are being sent out, it means we don’t have long to wait to see the final thing.

LaFerrari Successor Will Debut With Innovative Technology

While there’s no information on the new Ferrari, the exclusive flagship will almost certainly debut with advanced technology that will eventually trickle down to ‘lesser’ models.

The LaFerrari, for example, employed hybrid technology, marrying a traditional naturally-aspirated V12 with an electric motor and KERS system. Whereas hybrid tech was always used to improve efficiency and fuel consumption, Ferrari used electrification to extract more power from the drivetrain, with combined outputs of 950 horsepower – a remarkable figure for 2013.

The F250 will likely employ a plug-in hybrid system with multiple electric motors supporting a powerful combustion engine. While we’d like to see a V12 – possibly an electrified version of the motor found in the 12Cilindri – there’s a chance Ferrari may use a V6 engine. Several rumors suggest this is the direction the Prancing Horse is heading in. If that’s the case, it would be the first flagship from Maranello not to use a V12 since the twin-turbocharged F40 debuted in 1987 with a 2.9-liter V8.

Immense Power Is A Guarantee

What we know for sure is that the LaFerrari successor will be massively powerful. Considering that the SF90 produces 986 hp and the 12Cilindri has 819 horses, the Maranello-based brand must pull out all the stops with the F250. We’d expect well over 1,000 horsepower, resulting in spectacular performance. Based on the prototypes we’ve seen testing, the new halo Ferrari will be kitted out with sophisticated aerodynamic trickery and dramatic exterior styling. This is supported by the silhouette we’ve now seen, which calls to mind the shape and aerodynamic prowess of Le Mans racers, including Ferrari’s own back-to-back winner, the 499P.

Ferrari F250 Spied Wearing Production Bodywork As LaFerrari Successor Starts To Take Shape

The LaFerrari successor is taking shape ahead of an expected reveal later this year.

While this has not been confirmed, sources indicate that Ferrari will produce just 599 hardtops and 199 convertibles, with 30 track-only models to follow at a later date. Also unknown at this point is the chosen name for the LaFerrari successor, although trademarks suggest that the company could use Drake, F80, or LaRossa as the upcoming model’s official nameplate. While the arrival of a new halo Ferrari is exciting, we can only hope its arrival coincides with that of Porsche and McLaren’s planned flagships.
