Volvo’s Most Affordable EV Has Been DELAYED

Key Takeaways

  • The 2025 Volvo EX30 luxury EV faces a major delay in the US due to changes in global automotive landscape.
  • Production shift from China to Belgium to avoid hefty tariffs, pushing back expected US arrival until 2025.
  • Despite delay, Volvo remains committed to bringing the EX30 to the US, offering preorder customers alternatives.

The 2025 Volvo EX30 is one of the most anticipated electric vehicles of the year, bringing a luxury badge for a mainstream $35,000 price tag. Unfortunately, reservation holders who are eager to take delivery of the EX30 in the United States will need to be patient because Volvo has just announced a major delay.

“Today Volvo Car USA is informing retailers and EX30 preorder customers that due to changes in the global automotive landscape, the US introduction of the EX30 will be delayed while we ramp up production at our plant in Ghent, Belgium, with a 2025 target delivery date to be announced,” a Volvo spokesperson told CarBuzz. The EX30 was set to arrive in late 2024, but will now be pushed back until the following calendar year. Volvo did not provide a specific month or quarter to expect EX30 arrivals in the US.

“Importantly, we remain committed to bringing EX30 to the US and are working hard to get it into customer hands.”

Why The Delay?

While not expected, this delay is not surprising. Early EX30 production was set to come from Volvo’s factory in China, but recently hiked tariffs from President Biden would likely make these units far too expensive to turn a profit. Instead, Volvo will wait for production to begin in Ghent, Belgium to avoid the 100% tariff on Chinese-built EVs.

Just because your car was built in America, doesn’t mean it won’t be impacted.

“We’ll offer customers with existing preorders several options to drive a new Volvo until their EX30 arrives,” the spokesperson added. The EX30 remains a cornerstone of Volvo Cars’ ongoing strategic transformation and reflects our ambition to build cars where we sell them as much as possible.” No specific details were given, but we imagine Volvo will attempt to offer an EX40 or EX40 as consolation. As a reminder, Volvo recently renamed several of its products, including the C40 Recharge (now EC40) and XC40 Recharge (now EX40).

Will You Wait For The Volvo EX30?

Volvo has delayed the EX30 EV until 2025. Will you wait, or buy something else instead?

Why Does This Matter?

The EX30’s delay is important for several reasons. First, it temporarily deprives American consumers of an affordable luxury EV, which was set to start at just $34,950. It was also set to be the quickest Volvo ever (0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds) with the dual-motor version priced at $44,900.

This news also emphasizes the real-world impact of Biden’s Chinese tariffs. There aren’t many Chinese-built cars available in the US market, but the EX30 sets an example of how hard it will be to sell such a vehicle here. Building an EV in China sounded like a good idea to bring down costs, but not anymore.
