Don’t Let The Fake Exhausts Fool You, This is Ferrari’s First EV

Ferrari is preparing to launch its first-ever electric vehicle. While the idea of a battery-electric Prancing Horse may be sacrilege to some, times are changing, and even Maranello has to adapt. Expected to be revealed next year (and debut in 2026), the first EV has been spotted testing in Italy, albeit in prototype guise.

Spotted by the @derek.photography Instagram channel, the test mule uses a modified Maserati Levante body with Ferrari Roma-style headlights. According to the original post, the wheels are new EV-specific items that will likely reduce drag and improve range. At this stage, the wheels are likely temporary and for use on the prototype.

First Ferrari EV Will Carry A Hefty Price Tag

The prototype is sporting a black-and-gray disguise with blue tape and faux exhaust pipes to avoid raising suspicions, but Ferrari isn’t fooling anybody. Very little is known about the automaker’s first electric car, but rumors indicate that it will be even more expensive than the new 12Cilindri, with an estimated starting price of $535,000.

If that’s the case, it’s doubtful that the first Ferrari EV will debut as an electric crossover/SUV. Engineers are likely using the Levante body to throw people off; Ferrari’s debut electric car will almost certainly be an exotic sports car or roadster. That being said, the company may be already testing a second EV. The Purosangue has been very successful, with demand outstripping supply. Offering an electric alternative (or replacement) would make a lot of sense, but again, this remains to be seen.

What We Know So Far

The Italian marque has yet to reveal what form its new electric car will take. However, just last week, Ferrari opened its new e-building facility where it plans to produce its electric vehicle alongside hybrid and ICE models. Ferrari will manufacture all electrical components in-house, including the electric motors and high-voltage batteries.

An evocative engine and exhaust note have always played a significant role in the Ferrari experience. A raw, visceral V12 or V8 noise adds to the emotion. While EVs are remarkably quick, the lack of an engine note won’t appeal to traditional customers. To that end, Ferrari promises its electric cars will produce a soulful and “authentic” sound worthy of the hallowed badge. Earlier this year, CarBuzz uncovered patent filings that show Ferrari is working on a unique system that will amplify the natural noises from the electric motors and aero to create an appealing noise through the use of resonators and valves. If the thought of an electric Ferrari is upsetting, fear not: the automaker has promised to build V12 engines for as long as it is allowed.
