Key Takeaways

  • Genesis X Gran Racer Vision Gran Turismo Concept is a high-performance, race-inspired concept car and halo of the Magma lineup.
  • The car features a V6 e-supercharged engine and hybrid drivetrain with 1,540 hp and 1,051 lb-ft of torque.
  • While the concept car is not intended for production, it may serve as inspiration for a future Genesis sports car.

Genesis is leaning hard into launching its Magma performance sub-brand ahead of the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, but while most models are meant to be sleeper performance cars that don’t shout about their capabilities, this one is different. Meet the Genesis X Gran Racer Vision Gran Turismo Concept, the latest addition to be added to the Magma lineup and a derivative of the Genesis X Gran Berlinetta Concept revealed in December last year. But there’s just one problem: Genesis seemingly has no intent to actually build this. Why, then, is it punting it as a member of the Magma lineup if it’s just a fictional supercar destined for Gran Turismo players to enjoy? Before we answer that, let’s talk about the newcomer.

Genesis aims to double sales by the end of the decade, but keeping customers happy is its top priority.

V6-Powered Supercar With Wild Race-Inspired Aero

An evolution of the X Gran Berlinetta, the new mouthful of a concept is meant to be a racing version thereof. To that end, it leans hard into the aero department with ground effects aero to suck it to the road surface, including a sizable rear diffuser and various canards all over the body. Additionally, active aerodynamic flaps are electronically controlled on the fly, and a flat underbody makes this one slippery sucker. Plus, there’s a ginormous rear wing with a central fin that would look at home on a Le Mans racer.

Power is sourced from a V6 engine with the e-supercharger technology seen in the GV80 Coupe paired with an electric motor on the front axle. Combined, these systems generate 1,540 horsepower (469 hp more than the original X Gran Berlinetta) and 1,051 lb-ft of torque, and the V6 can rev to 10,000 rpm.

  • E-Supercharged Lambda II V6: 870 horsepower/790 lb-ft of torque
  • Front e-motor: 670 hp/225 lb-ft
  • Combined outputs: 1,540 hp/1,051 lb-ft

Inside the cabin, an abundance of carbon fiber and a slender full-width display greet two occupants, with a racing-style yoke clad in Alcantara. Throughout, the goal is to reduce weight, but high-quality materials are also used to remind occupants this is still a premium product.

Too Good To Be True Or A Sign Of Things To Come?

The numbers sound fantastic, and the car looks even better, but there’s nothing to say any of it is actually real because this is a concept car for a video game, where you can make up figures and not have to approve them in the real world. But why is Genesis punting multiple concepts as halo cars for its Magma lineup if they’re not real?

Expert Opinion

I was at the recent launch of the Genesis Nurburgring Track Taxi, where the Magma range was introduced to the European market. Genesis is developing the performance arm of its portfolio and I was told by various top execs that an “unbelievable” number of projects are in the pipeline. Having also spoken with Genesis and Hyundai engineers in Germany about a potential sports car and if Hyundai N would one day create a standalone N car (like BMW M did with the M1 and more recently the soon-to-be-discontinued XM), while nothing was confirmed, it was certainly not ruled out. The X Gran Racer VGT Concept is highly unlikely to become a production car (at best, a highly limited model for the Middle East might be born). But could we see a real sports car from Genesis inspired by this concept at some point soon? We wouldn’t rule that one out.

Rumors have swirled for some time now suggesting Genesis wants to build a supercar, or at least a high-end sports car, of its own – especially after the brand outright said a “high-performance purebred sports car is coming.” Then, we discovered the GT90 trademark as a potential name for such a model. We know Hyundai officials are desperate to produce the N Vision 74 hydrogen sports car concept, and it’s been suggested the same platform could give rise to a Genesis sports car.
