China Wants To Break Nurburgring Record With New Supercar

Key Takeaways

  • The Yangwang U9, a Chinese electric supercar, was spotted at Nurburgring for testing.
  • The U9 is a stark performance EV contender, capable of 0-62 mph in 2.3 seconds and 192 mph.
  • It could be aiming to join Nurburgring lap records, challenging Rimac Nevera’s current time.

The Yangwang U9 has been spotted in the Nurburgring. The Chinese electric supercar, made by the subbrand of the Warren Buffett-backed BYD, is a $233,000 Rimac Nevera fighter that pushes power up to 1,300 horsepower and 1,239 lb-ft of torque.

YouTube channel CarSpyMedia got a good look at a pair of Yangwang U9 EVs on the popular German track, both wearing checked camouflage wraps to hide their identities. We’re not sure about the reason behind the concealments, given that it was already fully revealed earlier this year. Evidently, BYD is testing the U9 for handling and performance, pushing the car hard to its limits. At one point in the video below, you’ll see their brakes glowing while on a hot lap.

Why The Nurburgring?

Despite being less powerful than the Nevera, the Yangwang U9 can still compete with performance EVs. BYD claims it can sprint from 0-62 mph in just 2.3 seconds and reach 192 mph. It also has a claimed quarter-mile time of under 10 seconds.

However, the Yangwang U9’s biggest asset is its handling. Beyond its aerodynamic bits, the electric supercar boasts a DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System, which can electronically adjust suspension travel up to 2.95 inches. While this feature can be a neat party trick, it’s for enhanced handling performance, which the Chinese automaker could be testing at the world-famous racetrack, but we can’t deny breaking records on the Green Hell could be on the horizon.

Breaking Nurburgring Records

Nurburgring lap records have always made headlines, so it’s not far-fetched to believe that the Yangwang U9 aims to join the list of fast cars that lapped the German track. However, the goal to become the fastest-production EV that has lapped the ‘Ring is a tough challenge, given that the crown currently goes to the U9’s rival, the Rimac Nevera.

The same man who holds the key to the Bugatti kingdom is also responsible for the world’s most exciting electric hypercar.

The Nevera’s current record at the Nurburgring is 7:05.298, with Croatian racing driver Martin Kodrić piloting the electric hypercar. Whether the U9 can beat this time – or if it’s even trying to – remains to be seen, but we’ll keep an eye out. Of note, deliveries of the U9 to its owners will begin this year.
