Key Takeaways

  • The seventh generation BMW M5 sedan has started production in Germany.
  • It now has a standard plug-in hybrid powertrain that produces 717 horsepower.
  • Set to arrive later this year, it will be priced from $119,500.

The seventh generation of the BMW M5 recently made its debut as the most powerful M5 ever. Due to arrive for the 2025 model year, it now sports a plug-in hybrid powertrain that’s found in the XM SUV developing a total of 717 horsepower from a combination of a V8 engine and a single electric motor. We’ll also be getting the M5 Touring wagon, but details on that one are still under wraps.

4.4-Liter Twin-Turbo V8 Gas PHEV

What we do know about is the new sedan, which will have a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 577 hp with 553 lb-ft of torque all on its own. Add in a 14.8-kWh battery with an electric motor in the eight-speed automatic gearbox, and you get an extra 194 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. This brings the total to a tidy 717 hp to make this one heck of a performance sedan. All this power began rolling off the assembly line earlier this week with the start of production at the Dingolfing plant in Germany.

A Network Of Plants

This plant has a long history with the M5, delivering the pre-assembled bodies for the first M5s way back in the 1980s. These were then completed by hand in Garching. Since the second generation in 1988, the M5 sedan has been built entirely at the Dingolfing plant in Lower Bavaria. The vehicle’s main components are also produced on-site or supplied by nearby component plants.

The chassis, for example, comes from one component plant while the battery is made right next door and the carbon-fiber roof is sourced from the Landshut plant about 19 miles away. The M5 body is based on the standard production body for the 5 Series, but with a stiffer body structure that is also wider with flared wheel arches for its unique rear axle, which are modifications made in the body shop.

All The Colors Of The Rainbow And More

Those who purchase the new BMW M5 sedan can choose from ten standard paint colors, including Isle of Man Green metallic and Frozen Deep Grey metallic, which has a matte finish. As for the vibrant yellow hue you see here, this is one of the many BMW Individual options, likely Speed Yellow Uni, which is one of 150 additional finishes available for the M5. Four interior color combinations are offered, including Black, Silverstone/Black, Red/Black, and a brilliant Kyalami Orange/Black combination.

The BMW M5 is back- but what improvements does it bring?

The Elephant In The Spec Sheet

In addition to striking styling, the M5 sedan is no performance slouch with a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 190 mph. But keen M5 fans will realize that sprint is actually slower than the outgoing model, which could manage the same in 3.1 seconds. Why is the new model slower? Well, while Bugatti might have been able to get away with a plug-in hybrid hypercar being lighter than the model it replaces, BMW hasn’t. The plug-in hybrid system on the new M5 weighs 881 lbs, and the latest model is more than 1,000 lbs heavier than the sedan it replaces. So while it may have more power, it has a lot more weight to contend with and now tips the scales at 5,390 lbs.

Will that play in the minds of buyers? That’s on them, but what we do know is that the most powerful M5 ever built comes at a price. In the US, it carries a starting MSRP of $119,500 and is expected to arrive later this year. Production at the Dingolfing plant is ramping up over the coming weeks with the goal of producing several dozen new M5s per day.
