Mazda Planning Something Special For Miata’s 35th Anniversary

Key Takeaways

  • Mazda will introduce a 35th Anniversary Edition Miata MX-5.
  • This was confirmed by MX-5 Miata Program Manager Shigeki Saito.
  • The vehicle will reportedly receive a special paint color and will only be available for a limited time.

Mazda’s iconic little sports car is turning 35 this year. The automaker will introduce a special Miata 35th Anniversary Edition model to celebrate this milestone. This is according to MX-5 Miata Program Manager Shigeki Saito, who confirmed that Mazda will produce this special model.

Speaking at the 2024 Karuizawa Meeting last month, Saito told Miata fans that the 35th Anniversary model will be produced for a certain period of time, but build numbers won’t be limited. So, anyone who orders the 35th Anniversary Edition car will receive one as long as it was ordered within the allotted period. CarBuzz has contacted Mazda USA for comment and will update this story once we receive a reply.

A Special Paint Color Is Promised

Not much is known about the forthcoming anniversary model except that it will receive a special paint color. Miata fans are hoping for yellow or green, with several Miata MX-5 forum users and YouTube comments calling for British Racing Green or a golden metallic yellow. We’re guessing it will be the latter, as Saito hinted that Karuizawa Meeting organizers must prepare a gold pen. “A color that has gold in it, and oh, this is a hint,” suggesting he would sign the car with a matching pen.

Aside from that, the 35th Anniversary Edition remains a mystery. However, we can look at the 30th Anniversary Edition for a preview of what to expect. Introduced in 2019, the roadster was fitted with several unique touches. This included a delightful exterior shade called Racing Orange, Rays forged wheels, and 30th Anniversary badging. But the changes weren’t merely aesthetic.

What We Can Expect

Already a sharp little motorcar, Mazda made the 30th Anniversary even more of a joy to pilot, with Brembo front brake and Nissin rear brake calipers (painted orange) and Bilstein dampers for manual-equipped cars. Elsewhere, the theme continued with orange accents littered throughout the interior. Additional luxuries included a nine-speaker Bose sound system and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata gets some updates for 2024 that make it even better at what it does best: provide sports car attitude in a user-friendly package.

It remains to be seen whether the MX-5 Miata 35th Anniversary will be offered in the United States, but we see no reason it won’t. There’s a massive Miata following in the US, and given that there are no production limitations, Mazda may find that American customers will have a healthy appetite for the 35th Anniversary. The last model was originally limited to 3,000 units globally, with 500 allocated for the United States, but after demand surged, production was extended, and an additional 143 cars came to America. As with the 30th Anniversary Edition, expect Mazda to offer the next celebration car with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions.
