Volvo EX30 Owners Are Giving Up Their Cars: Here’s Why

Key Takeaways

  • Volvo EX30 delayed to 2025 due to US issues and Chinese tariffs.
  • Customers experiencing software issues, including screens, steering, and charging problems.
  • Some customers returning cars for refunds, but EX30 still on sale with stock available.

The Volvo EX30 has faced all sorts of issues since it was announced. It was significantly delayed in the US and then, in light of the recently announced Chinese tariffs, pushed out even further to sometime in 2025. That makes for some frustrated customers who aren’t getting the cars they ordered and may end up in an XC40 Recharge instead. But that might not be such a bad thing after all. The car is already available in Europe and is experiencing a host of software issues.

These issues run the gamut from screens that go black to steering wheel buttons that cease to work. Some customers have even had trouble getting their cars to charge, which is no small problem for an electric vehicle. Others have had the automatic emergency braking systems activated for no reason.

Drivers Have Had Enough Of The EX30 After Numerous Issues

The list goes on to include completely bricked infotainment systems and displays that show the incorrect time and range. Some owners have even had their profiles reset to factory settings and experienced failed driver assistance systems. The problems are extensive and, in some cases, bad enough that owners have simply had it with trying to drive the EX30 at all.

According to AutoCar, some people have taken their cars right back to Volvo for a full refund. Exactly how many people have thrown in the towel and returned their cars is unclear, but Volvo acknowledged that it is happening in a small number of cases. It’s hard to imagine just how bad it would have to be for someone to return a whole car.

2025 Volvo EX30 Ready To Launch

The problem with software issues in a car like the EX30 is that it’s not just one or two things that are controlled by software, but key vehicle functions. That includes everything from the headlights to the climate control, all of which are accessed through its infotainment screen.

Is The Volvo XC40 Recharge A Good Alternative To The EX30?

The EX30 is delayed until sometime in 2025. Is the Volvo XC40 Recharge, soon to be renamed simply EX40, a good substitute if you simply cannot wait to buy a new car?

At the moment, Volvo has removed the EX30 from its online configurator in the UK, but says this is only because the 2025 model year is due on July 8. That means this EV is still on sale with stock sitting on dealer lots available right now despite some customers having such challenging software issues.
