Carbon Fiber Body Kit Turns Toyota GR Corolla Into Aggressive Hyper Hatch

Key Takeaways

  • Japanese tuner Varis releases an aftermarket styling kit for the Toyota GR Corolla.
  • The kit consists of several lightweight carbon fiber and FRP components.
  • Kit costs around $6,590, although that does not include the rear splitter.

The Toyota GR Corolla is one of the best hot hatches money can buy. From the enthusiastic three-cylinder motor to the pin-sharp handling, it’s a hoot-and-a-half to drive. But if you want to turn heads, you may need some help from Varis, an aftermarket tuner that has just released a new kit for the GR Corolla.

The Arising 1 kit comprises eight components that can be purchased separately. However, as the pictures show, the full effect is only possible with all the accessories. Starting at the front, the ¥160,000 ($993) lip spoiler sits under the bumper, adding some motorsport-inspired flair to the fascia. Made from carbon fiber, the lip creates the illusion that the Corolla is sitting closer to the ground than it is. More subtle are the front side turbulators (canards) that widen the front bumper. These are constructed from a fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) and cost ¥60,000 ($372).

Prices are based on the conversion from Japanese Yen to US Dollars and are accurate at the time of writing. Varis does have a North American distributor, and as the kit is not yet listed on its site, pricing is subject to change.

Carbon Add-Ons Make GR Corolla Look Like A Road-Going Racer

The carbon fiber side skirts are surprisingly subtle and retail for ¥220,000 ($1,365). With aero flicks on either side, they highlight the GR Corolla’s pronounced wheel arches, lending the vehicle a more aggressive demeanor. A rear two-piece splitter, positioned on either end of the rear bumper, is also available. There’s no pricing for this piece at the moment.

Moving on to the pricier options, Varis also offers an adjustable rear wing. Mounted on the tailgate, the three-piece spoiler uses a carbon wing and FRP bases. The Japanese tuner says it can be adjusted in three stages, presumably to suit different types of driving. It may be functional, but the spoiler is attractive, sprinkling more character onto the Corolla’s rear end. The standard spoiler is somewhat underwhelming, so this is one of the best parts Varis could have introduced. Yours for ¥180,000 ($1,117).

Want All The Parts? That’s Going To Cost You

The carbon hood is lighter and more rigid than the OEM part while providing the GR Corolla with a sportier look. Varis says it utilizes carbon vacuum molding for the surface, which gives the same appearance as dry carbon. The inner part of the hood uses FRP. It’s the most expensive part, retailing for ¥350,000 ($2,172). Whereas the stock hood weighs 16.8 lbs, the carbon fiber replacement is 11.5 lbs. That may not sound like a big difference, but any weight reduction is welcome for performance-minded drivers.

Making the hot hatch slipperier has just gotten easier, and it’s thanks to an OEM part.

A carbon hood with no clear paint is also available for ¥270,000 ($1,675). Lastly, Varis has a carbon fiber exhaust heat shield and exhaust outlet cover available for ¥32,000 ($199) and ¥60,000 ($372). These subtle additions look great and would work well as individual accessories or as part of the kit. Varis does offer kits for vehicles in the United States, but the kit isn’t on its local website just yet. However, we expect it to be added soon. Based on the Japanese prices, you’re looking at spending around $6,590, although that doesn’t include pricing for the rear splitter. Sadly, there are no performance mods on offer, but that’s not a problem. The standard 300-horsepower motor and six-speed manual transmission provide plenty of thrills.
